2017-18 PGA Tour Golf – Season Money List Betting Preview

It may not start with a bang but the new PGA Tour season gets underway this week. Another slog of almost 50 tournaments begins at the Safeway Open and culminates as ever with the Tour Championship in September. There are stacks and stacks of money to be won and for us gamblers there is a PGA Tour Money List market to bet on.

Recent Winners

2017 – Justin Thomas

2016 – Dustin Johnson

2015 – Jordan Spieth

2014 – Rory McIlroy

2013 – Tiger Woods

2012 – Rory McIlroy

2011 – Luke Donald

2010 – Matt Kuchar

2009 – Tiger Woods

2008 – Vijay Singh

The Format

All the money won throughout the year in official PGA Tour events, WGC events and the four majors will count towards this market. The bonus money for the FedEx Cup DOES NOT COUNT. At the end of the season the player who has won the most money will be the winner of this market. We’re not necessarily looking for the winner of the FedEx Cup £10 million.

Market Leaders

Jordan Spieth is a 7/2 favourite in this market. He won this in 2015 when he landed a couple of majors and was second by half a million dollars in 2017. You would think he would need to win at least one major to get this done but that is certainly not beyond arguably the best player in the world.

Dustin Johnson is currently the world number one and is 4/1 to regain the leading money crown having won it in 2016. He landed the US Open that year but a year of injury and no major meant he could only come third, well over $1 million behind Justin Thomas at the top.

Thomas is the 7/1 third favourite to hang onto the crown. He won a major and four other tournaments in 2017 but even then only bagged half a million more than Spieth. You’ve got to think there will be a comedown after such a strong campaign and if there is it is hard to see him reclaiming this particular crown, especially if he doesn’t win a major.

Rory McIlroy is 8/1 to land the most money in 2018 but you would be taking a major leap of faith that he not only stays fit but can get back on top of the game after a winless season. Jon Rahm might be a better option at 12/1 especially having come fifth in his rookie season where he played most of the courses for the first time.

Main Bet

I fully expect Rickie Fowler to have a big year in 2017-18. He has just seen two of his mates have amazing years winning the last two majors and battling out the FedEx Cup and I would imagine he will want a piece of that pie. Fowler has not been far away this season. He won once last season but was in the top 10 a ridiculous 10 more times. If he turns those into a couple more wins and were one of them to become a major, and he will win a major before long, then he is going to take some beating at 16/1.

Outsiders

Two men who I see have plenty of improvement in them come in the 80/1 bracket. They are Daniel Berger and Patrick Cantlay. Berger is already a tour winner and actually came in the top 15 of the money list last season. He has just tasted team glory in the Presidents Cup and being around major winners and playing with them and things usually inspires players to step up a level. I would not be surprised to see Berger win a couple of tournaments this season and if they are timed right he could earn enough money to get into the mix.

Cantlay only played 13 events last season but he still made the Tour Championship off the back of it. His past is well documented but there is no doubt in my mind that he’s a tournament winner in waiting and when he lands one I don’t see him stopping there. Having made it to East Lake he is definitely in the majority of the big tournaments next season so he can focus fully on winning events. I’ll pay to see how he goes this season.
