2017-18 Premier League – Tottenham vs Watford Betting Preview

The Premier League weekend concludes at Wembley Stadium as Tottenham Hotspur host Watford in something of a London derby in the Monday Night Football. It is fair to say this is a more important match for the home side than the visitors.

Tottenham have seen Chelsea close right in on them in recent times so they could really do with a win here to put a little bit of breathing space between themselves and the champions of last season. Watford are playing for pride and not much else really.

Tottenham

It looked like being one of those strong Tottenham ends to the season with the way they were going about their business but they’ve hit the skids in the last week or two with a defeat to Manchester City and a draw with Brighton in their last two Premier League matches and then the loss to Man Utd in the FA Cup semi-final last week.

Despite all that they go into this match knowing that they need just eight points from their final four matches to guarantee a top four finish and be guaranteed Champions League football next term. I don’t think we should criticise their recent results too much but were they to fail to win this questions will start to be asked.

Watford

The Hornets go into this match on 38pts which while that isn’t technically mathematically safe with the other fixtures between now and the end of the season it would take a mathematical miracle for them to go down now. They could do with finishing their campaign on a high though as they are currently in the middle of a run of no wins in six.

Early on in that run you could forgive them because they faced some tricky fixtures but there has been nothing tough about their last two on paper in Huddersfield away and Crystal Palace at home so to win neither, and worse still fail to score in both is not good. To make matters worse they are without a win in 10 on the road and haven’t scored in their last six away matches.

Team News

Danny Rose could be back for Tottenham after missing their last three matches with a calf issue. If he is passed fit then the only man missing for the home side is Harry Winks.

Watford have plenty of injury problems and Roberto Pereyra has added to them with him having a groin issue. Gerard Deulofeu is back from an infection though and he could start. The match is expected to come too soon for Nathaniel Chalobah.

Betting

While I’m always wary of Wembley Stadium inspiring the opponents of Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City were just the second team to score against Spurs in the league at HQ since the turn of the year so Mauricio Pochettino and his men generally have a good defensive record there.

I don’t see too much changing in that regard here. Watford have not found the net in their previous six away matches and I wouldn’t be expecting them to see an awful lot of the ball in this match so I’m far from convinced they are going to find the net here. I do expect Tottenham to win the game so just in case this is a low key, end of season type clash I’ll take Tottenham to win to nil here which covers the 1-0 scoreline should that come into play.
