2017-18 Sky Bet League 2 – Promotion and Relegation Betting Preview

The other Sky Bet League 2 markets for us to look at heading into the new season are the promotion and relegation ones where there is usually plenty of value to be found. The promotion market is easier to tackle given that there are double the places up for grabs but we’ll look at the both of them here.

Promotion

With four promotion places and teams as low down as seventh in the table having the chance to go up the value can be extended much deeper down the market when it comes to finding a side we think will go up.

I’m not going to tie up cash for nine months on a hotpot so while I fully expect Luton for example to get promoted having my cash tied up in a 13/8 poke is not for me. They are one for the accumulators and things but there is some value deeper in the betting.

Coventry are a little short at 5/2 to get promoted but they are another side I like. The other one I’m keen on is the sort of price I don’t mind taking and that is Port Vale.

There has been a big turnaround of players at Vale Park heading into this campaign but they were unfortunate to get promoted last season. There were probably worse than them over the course of 46 matches but Vale had injury issues galore and couldn’t get the results they needed late on.

Among the players who have come in Vale have brought a goalscorer in Tom Pope, a decent level defender in Joe Davis and a solid midfielder in Michael Tonge. Along with Accrington who I have backed outright I fancy Vale will surprise a few this season and at 13/2 they look a big price to go straight back up.

Relegation

It is not so easy to find a side to go down given that there are only two places and all too often in this division someone has their finances go kaput and that automatically sorts out one of the spots.

That said I’m nothing if not a chancer so I will take a couple of sides at decent enough prices. Surprisingly for the first time since I’ve been running this site I’m not going towards Newport either!

The two sides I think are overpriced are Barnet and Cheltenham. Cheltenham didn’t look much last season and were fortunate that Leyton Orient had their issues else they might have gone down. Gary Johnson’s health issues were not helpful but they looked light anyway and haven’t really strengthened significantly. At 7/1 they look overpriced to me.

Barnet stalled last season. A few changes of manager never helped that but there is always the suspicion that if anything were to happen to John Akinde they would really be in trouble. If he stays all season and suffers no injuries or anything they should have enough to stay up. If he doesn’t stay or misses a portion of the season they could really struggle. At 9/1 it would be rude not to pay to see how they go.
