2017-18 Sky Bet League 2 – Saturday 5th August Matches Betting Preview

The lengthy period of agony for English domestic football punters ends on Saturday when the Sky Bet League 2 season gets underway and for me that is good for two reasons. Obviously it means we can get back to regular betting on English football but I am also a Luton fan so I get some football to watch!

Saturday’s fixtures are as follows:

Stevenage v Newport

Exeter v Cambridge

Accrington v Colchester

Chesterfield v Grimsby

Coventry v Notts County

Crawley v Port Vale

Crewe v Mansfield

Carlisle v Swindon

Forest Green v Barnet

Luton v Yeovil

Morecambe v Cheltenham

Wycombe v Lincoln City

Big Matches

The two big matches in terms of the ante-post betting see the favourites Mansfield head to Crewe for a tasty looking clash while Luton, the second favourites to win the title, play host to a Yeovil side they walloped in two of their three matches last season. Lincoln begin their life back in the Football League with a trip to Wycombe while Forest Green’s Football League debut comes at home to Barnet.

Best of the Rest

It is too early to call matches relegation six pointers but the match between Morecambe and Cheltenham could be seen that way. Swindon start life in the basement division with a lengthy trip to Carlisle while Port Vale head to Crewe. Chesterfield host Grimsby and the other side to come down – Coventry – host Notts County.

Betting

It is the opening week of the season so I’m not going steaming in here by any means but there are two bets on the card that I like and they won’t be a secret because I waxed lyrical about them both in my outright preview.

Luton enjoyed 5-2 and 4-0 wins over Yeovil in the second half of last season and I expect them to emphatically beat the Glovers on this opening day. Preparations have gone well for Nathan Jones and while last season the absence of Danny Hylton would have been strongly felt the arrival of James Collins means the Town talisman won’t be missed as much.

Yeovil look in a bit of a state at the minute and rumours are that they are underprepared for the season. They were still playing pre-season friendlies on Wednesday night which is not ideal. Luton have the perfect chance to send out a marker that they are title challengers here and I expect them to do just that.

The side I’ve backed outright in the division is Accrington and I think they can get off to a winning start against a Colchester side who could flatter to deceive without Chris Porter this season. Accrington flew home last season and while they have lost Shay McCartan to Bradford they warmed up for this match with a 5-0 thumping of Southport last weekend. John Coleman was making big noises in the excellent Racing Post pull out and I expect his side to beat a Colchester team that don’t look as strong as the one which featured last year.

Tips

WON – Back Luton (-0.75AH) to beat Yeovil for a 4/10 stake at 1.82 with BetVictor

WON – Back Accrington (-0.25AH) to beat Colchester for a 4/10 stake at 1.84 with BetVictor
