2017 Aegon Championships Tennis – Day 1 Betting Preview

The opening day of the Aegon Championships is a largely low key one as the tournament starts off slowly. The really big names don’t get their campaigns underway until Tuesday but on what is said to be a scorching day in London there is still plenty of the crowds to enjoy, especially on the Centre Court.

There is plenty of TV coverage of this tournament this week and plenty of streams for the main courts too so we can keep up to date with how everything is faring which is good.

Centre Court

There is an all-French battle to open up the tournament on the main court. That is between Adrian Mannarino and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga before the champion of 2014 takes to the court when Grigor Dimitrov takes on Ryan Harrison. Nick Kyrgios picked up a seeding this week when Rafael Nadal pulled out and he faces Donald Young in the third match before the action concludes with Kyle Edmund facing Denis Shapovalov.

Court 1

There are a couple of doubles matches on this court with the number one seeds Henri Kontinen and John Peers in action but in between those matches there is one singles match. Surprisingly it has the number seven seed and former Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych in action. He takes on Steve Darcis.

Betting

It is a quiet day on the schedule and a quiet opening for me from a betting point of view too as I am going with just the one bet. It comes in the final match of the day on the main court too so we will have a wait a while.

Kyle Edmund played Denis Shapovalov in the Davis Cup earlier in the year in that infamous match when the Canadian defaulted for twatting the umpire with the ball in frustration and now they meet for the first time on grass. Edmund was well in control in that Davis Cup tie. He led 2-0 in sets and 2-1 in the third set and I expect him to dominate here too.

Shapovalov has had a couple of matches over the weekend in qualifying for this but he could have lost the first of those. In the end he came through in a final set tiebreak but he’ll need to up his game here. Edmund looked in good touch in the French Open and was hitting the ball nicely. With the power he possesses he should have too much once again.

Tips

Back K.Edmund (-3.5 games) to beat D.Shapovalov for a 4/10 stake at 1.91 with NetBet
