2017 Africa Cup of Nations – Monday 23rd January Matches Betting Preview

The Group of Death draws to a close in the Africa Cup of Nations on Monday which means we are going to lose a big name from the tournament for the second day in a row. We lost the host nation Gabon on Sunday and on Monday either Tunisia or Algeria will go, possibly even both.

We already know that Senegal are through from this group. They take on Algeria in one game while Tunisia face Zimbabwe in the other on Monday.

Senegal vs Algeria

You would think Senegal will bring a few fringe players into their side for this one given that they are already through and that might well suit Algeria who know they have to win and hope Zimbabwe win the other match in order to qualify for the quarter finals.

Given the potential for Senegal to rest some players Algeria have taken up the position of favouritism for the match but I’m not sure I would want to be backing them. Should Tunisia go in front early it might be that Algeria give up the ghost and that wouldn’t be good. At the same time Senegal have a good squad so there could be value on them as an outsider.

We don’t know the exact line up that Senegal are going to put out though which puts me off getting involved in the game so I will sit this one out.

Zimbabwe vs Tunisia

A win for Zimbabwe will put them into the knockout stages if they keep ahead of Algeria on goal difference should the Algerians win the other match. A draw sends Tunisia through. Even with a win they can only finish second but with Burkina Faso waiting for the runners up in this group coming second may be no bad thing.

I accept the pitfalls of backing a side who don’t have to win but I do believe there is a clear gulf in class between Tunisia and Zimbabwe and I expect that to show here. Zimbabwe will go on the attack because they have to win but I don’t think Tunisia will mind that too much because they are quite happy to soak up pressure and play on the break.

We’ve really seen the minnows struggle in these last few days and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Zimbabwe do that here given the pretty hectic schedule. With that in mind I’m happy to be on Tunisia here.
