The opening day of the German Masters at the Tempodrom in Berlin is a two session day of action as half of the field get their campaigns underway in the German city on Wednesday.
We have some big players on show right from the start in this tournament which should ensure we see plenty of decent snooker at a venue which inspires good snooker from the players with the passionate crowds turning up in numbers looking to be entertained.
Afternoon Session
Defending champion Martin Gould begins his title defence first up when he takes on Jamie Jones in what should be a good battle. The match of this session though comes in the form of the one between Stephen Maguire and Ali Carter. The other match of the three in the afternoon sees the Shootout champion Robin Hull taking on Jimmy White.
Evening Session
There are five matches in the evening session with all eyes on the one between The Masters champion Ronnie O’Sullivan and the Northern Ireland champion Mark King. Another good looking match sees Ryan Day taking on Mark Allen while elsewhere around the venue Tom Ford will play Peter Ebdon, John Astley meets Ricky Walden and Akani Songsermsawad faces Zhao Xintong.
Betting
I’m going with two bets in this match. The first is on a Stephen Maguire who I think will come through against Ali Carter. I like Carter. I’m a big fan but you can never be totally sure which Carter will turn up. Maguire has lost a little consistency against the really big names but you can’t argue with his record this season.
He has been a semi-finalist in the Shanghai Masters this season and made the last eight in India so he is still capable of good runs. Carter looked off colour at The Masters and hasn’t really convinced since his 147 in the qualifying for this tournament. I think Maguire wins there.
I also think Tom Ford beats Peter Ebdon. Ebdon is very much a confidence player and he can’t have much of that at the minute with the tough trot he is in. In fairness Tom Ford hasn’t been fantastic recently but he did beat Judd Trump to qualify for this and he did make the final of an event earlier in the season. This looks like a good time for Ford to come back to form and I’m happy to take him here.
