2017 Grand Slam of Darts – Day 2 Betting Preview

The Grand Slam of Darts continues on Sunday and this one is arguably the biggest day of the opening stage when the 32 players in the field all play their second group matches over the course of another bumper day of action.

Those who won on Saturday will meet each other on Sunday with the winners of those matches putting one foot into the knockout stages while the losers will also play each other in a match both men will need to win so we’re in for an interesting, intriguing and potentially exciting day.

Afternoon Session

It all gets underway with two men who lost on the opening day when Jeffrey de Zwaan takes on Scott Mitchell. The former BDO number one James Wilson takes on the current one in Mark McGeeney before Peter Wright looks to get his first win when he faces Corey Cadby. The last match between Saturday losers in the afternoon sees Simon Whitlock going up against Cameron Menzies.

The second half of the afternoon contains Saturday winners with Mensur Suljovic taking on Michael Smith in Group G before Gary Anderson plays Berry van Peer in Group H. The two best matches of the afternoon look to be Alan Norris against Glen Durrant and Dave Chisnall taking on Stephen Bunting.

Evening Session

As with the afternoon the four matches which include the Saturday losers get things going. Joe Murnan goes up against Ross Montgomery to begin the evening with Darren Webster meeting Danny Noppert after that. Steve Lennon takes on Jamie Hughes in an interesting match before James Wade looks to repair the damage of his opening defeat when he plays Peter Machin.

The first match between two winners sees Daryl Gurney facing Mark Webster before Phil Taylor will look to secure his passage into the knockout stages when he takes on Robbie Green. The match of the day is the penultimate game of the day when Michael van Gerwen takes on Rob Cross with Raymond Barneveld and Gerwyn Price closing off the action for the day.

Betting

I’m not going to go too mad over the course of Sunday but there are three bets that I like the look of. In the afternoon session although I’m on Michael Smith to win the group I can’t resist a punt on him to beat Mensur Suljovic. I mentioned in the outright preview how Smith has a good record in this group stage and he played well on Saturday. Suljovic came through his opening game with a win but his opponent faded badly in the match and I don’t see Smith doing that. Smith is comfortable over this distance and he’s the value in this afternoon clash.

Moving into the evening and I think Ross Montgomery is worth chancing to see off Joe Murnan. Both men lost their opening match 5-1 but the Scot lost to van Gerwen which was always going to happen. His tournament begins here really. With van Gerwen yet to play it could be argued that Murnan is already facing the exit and you wonder if he can find the motivation for this match. Montgomery has shown signs of some decent form this year and although he lost to MVG he gave himself more chances than many expected. The pressure of who he was facing caused him to miss them but he won’t be under as much pressure here so he looks a fair bet at odds against.

Darren Webster put in one of the stranger performances you’ll see on Saturday. He was either feast or famine but on the doubles in particular he really struggled. Danny Noppert looked a rusty player in his first match but I expect him to significantly come on for the run and he should be nearer his best on Sunday. He is a quality player who scores well and perhaps based on what we’ve seen from Webster on Saturday, Noppert finishes very well. His calmness under pressure can be rewarded with the win here.
