2017 NFL – Detroit Lions at New York Giants Betting Preview

The second Monday Night Football of the NFL season comes from the MetLife Stadium as the New York Giants host the Detroit Lions in a big NFC clash. Both sides will be eyeing up the play-offs this season so this is a match they will be keen to win to lay a marker down.

The Giants head into the contest off the back of a tame opening defeat last week while the Lions were too good for Arizona and will be looking to build on that with another win in this one.

New York Giants

Going into the season I expected a strong campaign from the New York Giants so I was disappointed with their output in their defeat to the Dallas Cowboys last week. I’m prepared to cut them some slack because they were without Odell Beckham Jr but they need to produce much more on offense going forward.

There were positives from last week. Their defence was pretty solid throughout despite being on the field for a long time so if they can up their game on offense then the good season I expected them to have could still materialise. They look like being without Beckham Jr for this one though so someone else will need to step up.

Detroit Lions

It took the Detroit Lions a while to get to grips with the Arizona Cardinals last week. They made a couple of offensive mistakes which you can attribute to the opening week of the campaign but when they found their feet they performed well and when you look at who did what there is still plenty more to come too.

Maybe the most impressive thing was the number of players who caught passes and contributed to the offensive plays. When they come up against a decent defence like they do here the more options they have the better it is. Detroit’s defence held its own too and it will need to do that again here if they are to succeed.

Betting

Often when these two meet you would think the offenses would be on top but that would have been when the Detroit Lions had Megatron at their disposal and when the New York Giants were an efficient offensive machine.

The Lions don’t have their former star anymore and you would have to say that the Giants are not the offense they once were so it could well be that the defences will rule the roost in this one. The Giants played some great defence last week but if Beckham Jr doesn’t lace up it is easy to see them struggling going the other way.

Detroit should have enough in their own defence to nullify the threat that comes their way so a 42.5pts line looks a shade on the high side to me. I’ll go under.
