Round 1 Recap

The lesser known Paul Waring stole the show on the opening day and he will take a two shot lead into the second round after firing a seven under 64 on Thursday. He leads from a group of three which includes Thomas Pieters as well as Alexander Bjork and Nathan Kinsey while Tommy Fleetwood and Peter Uihlein are three back on four under.

There is a large group on three under which includes the former champion Pablo Larrazabal and Andy Sullivan while an even bigger group on two under includes players like Graeme McDowell, Martin Kaymer, Alex Noren and Marcel Siem.

In terms of opening round bets we were unlucky on the opening day. Thongchai Jaidee tied with Danny Willett while a pair of double bogeys gave Johan Carlsson no chance.

Round 2 Preview

We don’t have a second round leader market with any liquidity so in terms of bets to consider on Friday we are restricted to the three ball markets where once again the majority of the groups have been priced up.

The only two men who really caught my eye in the groups who will be out in the morning were Thomas Pieters and Alex Noren and they both go out in the same grouping so in the end I’ve decided to go with just the one bet on Friday which comes in the afternoon tee times.

Chris Wood/Bernd Wiesberger/Matthew Fitzpatrick

Match tees off at 11.50 BST

One of the marquee groups in the afternoon session is this one featuring the former winner Bernd Wiesberger and English stars Chris Wood and Matthew Fitzpatrick. Wiesberger heads into the second round one under par with Wood and Fitzpatrick one over and five over respectively.

Fitzpatrick has still never broken par around this golf course so there is something about it which doesn’t suit his eye which is strange because with it suiting tee to green machines you would think he would go well. Wood’s record here isn’t much better save for last year but he has only broken par once in the second round in six attempts.

Wiesberger is a former winner here and had a good round from tee to green on Thursday and with time for his putter to warm up I am expecting him to go well again on Friday. The Austrian has been remarkably consistent this season and can stick in another decent round to have him in the mix ahead of the weekend.
