2017 Paul Lawrie Matchplay Golf – Round 2 Betting Preview

The first round of the Paul Lawrie Matchplay was full of shocks and surprises as expected and that will make sure the top players who did make it through the opening day will have focused their minds to avoid being on the wrong end of a shock when the second round gets played out on Friday.

Thursday Recap

We saw the tournament favourite Richie Ramsay disappear after only 16 holes when he was beaten by Tom Lewis while other fancied runners such as Nicolas Colsaerts, Richard Bland and James Morrison were all seen off in their first match too.

It was a hit and miss first day of the competition for us betting wise with Alejandro Canizares and Max Kieffer coming through while Marc Warren and Bradley Dredge were beaten, the former in extra holes annoyingly. We also lost two outrights with Robert Karlsson beaten on the 24th hole of an epic contest and James Morrison edged out.

Friday Betting

There will be 16 matches out on the golf course on Friday as we head towards the weekend and as ever each of them have been priced up in full. Having had a chance to see the course and assess the form of the players and how they are hitting it this should be a day where money can be made.

Having gone through all the cards of Thursday and the prices for Friday I have come up with a couple of bets that I fancy across the second round over the two sessions.

Edoardo Molinari vs Ashley Chesters

Match tees off at 08.55 BST

Edoardo Molinari certainly can’t complain about rustiness heading his second round contest against Ashley Chesters. The Italian had to go 24 holes before finally beating Robert Karlsson in the first round. Chesters was much more authoritative in beating Ricardo Gouveia.

I like the Englishman in this match. He has plenty of matchplay experience from the amateur ranks and that clearly served him well on Thursday. Molinari’s triple bogey on the 18th hole when a double would have halved the hole and won the match there and then showed a frailty that I didn’t like and I am expecting Chesters to take advantage of that and come through.

Thomas Detry vs Nacho Elvira

Match tees off at 13.05 BST

Two Europeans meet in the second match of the afternoon session when Thomas Detry takes on Nacho Elvira for a place in the last 16 of the tournament.

Both men are generally inexperienced in a tournament of this kind but that never stopped either of them coming through the opening round on Thursday. Detry was one of the players of the day and given that he seems to like Germany I see no reason why he won’t continue that good form. Elvira was only a couple under on the opening day which doesn’t really get it done so I’m with the Belgian here.
