2017 PDC World Darts Championship – Day 13 Evening Session Betting Preview

The last two quarter finals of the PDC World Darts Championship takes place on Friday night in what is the final session of arrers in 2016. We have an age old classic and the world number one to entertain us on what should be a fantastic night at the Alexandra Palace in London.

Michael van Gerwen vs Daryl Gurney

Michael van Gerwen:     Round 1 beat Kim Viljanen 3-0 – Ave: 103.34 180s: 5

                                                Round 2 beat Cristo Reyes 4-2 – Ave: 105.24 180s: 11

                                                Round 3 beat Darren Webster 4-1 – Ave: 104.44 180s: 8

Daryl Gurney:                   Round 1 beat Jermaine Wattimena 3-1 – Ave: 96.85 180s: 5

                                                Round 2 beat Robert Thornton 4-3 – Ave: 95.35 180s: 3

                                                Round 3 beat Mark Webster 4-3 – Ave: 92.33 180s: 7

Head to Head: 6-2

The evening begins with the world number one on show against the lowest ranked player left in the tournament when Michael van Gerwen takes on Daryl Gurney. Although MVG leads the head to head between the two it was Gurney who won their last meeting although that was over the best of 11 legs not nine sets.

You would have to acknowledge Michael van Gerwen has had a few scares this week but the impressive thing has been the stronger the pressure the better he has performed and that bodes well for him. Daryl Gurney has really struggled through the last two rounds but we should see his best here with him having nothing to lose.

I still don’t think that will be enough to keep Gurney close though and I expect van Gerwen to win with plenty in hand but the odds reflect that. MVG has taken out 161, 164 and 170 in his last two matches and looks relentless on the combination finishes. With that in mind I’m surprised his highest checkout line is 130.5 here and I’m happy to take the overs there.

Phil Taylor vs Raymond Barneveld

Phil Taylor:                          Round 1 beat David Platt 3-0 – Ave: 101.93 180s: 3

                                                 Round 2 beat Kevin Painter 4-0 – Ave: 92.73 180s: 2

                                                 Round 3 beat Kim Huybrechts 4-2 – Ave: 101.37 180s: 7

Raymond Barneveld       Round 1 beat Robbie Green 3-0 – Ave: 98.84 180s: 3

                                                 Round 2 beat Alan Norris 4-0 – Ave: 103.59 180s: 7

                                                 Round 3 beat Adrian Lewis 4-3 – Ave: 95.00 180s: 3

Head to Head: 56-16 (4 draws)

There is no doubt which takes the main billing in the quarter finals as two legends of the game meet 10 years after playing out that amazing final in 2007. Phil Taylor and Raymond Barneveld will battle for the 77th time here with both men thinking they can win this match and go on and win the tournament.

Phil Taylor has been up and down in this tournament and you only have to look at his post-match interview after his last game to know that something is bothering him somewhere. Raymond Barneveld cruised through the tournament in the first two rounds but had to come through a really nervy battle in the last round but he never lost his composure which was important.

In terms of the match betting I’m already on Barneveld to win the match having backed him to win the quarter before a dart was thrown in the tournament. I’m happy to stay with that though as I think the Dutchman will win but I wouldn’t put anyone off him at 13/8 if you’ve not already taken him for the section.

Given that both are really up for the job in this tournament I’m not expecting a quarter to be given either way. When they are on it both are playing really well and I’m expecting a tough battle here. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this one goes the distance but I’m expecting 5-3 at worst so over 7.5 sets looks the natural play with Barneveld to win a tight one.
