2017 Scottish Open Golf – Round 2 Betting Preview

The second round of the Scottish Open takes place over the Dundonald Links on Friday and by the end of the day we will half the midway cut and will get a clearer picture as to who could be in contention to win this fourth Rolex Series event of the year.

Round 1 Recap

It was a relatively low scoring opening round and at the conclusion of it we have Mikko Ilonen two shots clear on seven under par. He leads from a really strong group on five under that includes Rickie Fowler, Ian Poulter and Padraig Harrington.

Matt Kuchar, Paul Dunne and Stephen Gallacher are in the group a shot further back on four under while Adam Scott and Ross Fisher lead a large group on three under after the first day.

Unfortunately from a betting point of view Thursday was a write off with Lawrie losing by one and the other two bets being well beaten so there is work for us to do on the week for sure.

Friday 3 balls

Once again it is the three balls that I am looking at when it comes to betting on Friday. We saw on Thursday how unreliable the weather forecast is so it is hard to get stuck into any end of round leader bets on the evidence of that.

There are two I like on what should be another intriguing day of golf on the Scottish links. Both come in the afternoon session.

Rickie Fowler/Rory McIlroy/Henrik Stenson

Match tees off at 13.30 BST

Rickie Fowler outscored his illustrious playing partners by five shots in the case of Stenson and seven in McIlroy’s case and he looks a decent price to beat them both in this second round as well.

McIlroy is really struggling to keep the big numbers off his card and that was despite being in the top 10 for fairways hit in the opening round. His iron play was poor and the confidence doesn’t look there in his game. Henrik Stenson was seen having an extensive workout on his swing after Thursday’s round which suggests he isn’t happy here either. That should leave the way clear for Fowler to win again given that his game looks in decent enough shape.

Stewart Cink/Robert Karlsson/Thomas Detry

Back tees off at 14.10 BST

One of the later groups out onto the golf course on Friday is the one between the former Open champion Stewart Cink and two European players in Robert Karlsson and Thomas Detry.

We saw Detry in the brilliant Sky Zone on Thursday citing that he was tired and you didn’t get the impression that he was going to come out all guns blazing to make the cut here. The idea of a weekend off sounded right up his street.

Robert Karlsson actually won this group by three shots from Cink on Thursday but having only made two cuts since January the Swede isn’t used to putting two rounds together back to back which leads me to think the American is the one to be with here now that he has had time to acclimatise and adjust. 6/4 looks a decent enough price on him.
