2017 Tour Championship Golf – Round 3 Betting Preview

We are halfway through the Tour Championship and heading into the final 36 holes of the PGA Tour season we have three men tied at the top of the leaderboard and a stack of top class players bunched up in behind them for what promises to be a fantastic shootout for the FedEx Cup title.

Friday Recap

After a lower scoring day at East Lake on Friday, Justin Thomas, Paul Casey and Webb Simpson are tied at the top of the field on seven under par. There is a significant group one shot back on six under. They include Jon Rahm and our pre-tournament pick Justin Rose with Patrick Reed and Gary Woodland completing the group.

In total there are 17 men within four of the lead so moving day on Saturday promises to be an exciting, action packed day with the players looking to get into a strong position to push for the big money on Sunday.

Sadly Friday did not go to plan for us betting wise as both of our two ball bets finished level despite Woodland leading Rahm going up the last hole. Kisner tied with Perez after the latter holed out from the fairway on the 16th so it is fair to say our luck was out on Friday.

Saturday 2 balls

There is no market for the third round leader at the time of writing this preview but I’m not sure I would have taken anyone anyway because this tournament is unpredictable and the amount of quality there is on the leaderboard is insane. Each of the 15 groups on the course have been priced up though and there are two bets I like.

Matt Kuchar vs Brian Harman

Match tees off at 17.45 BST

Matt Kuchar had a horror three holes in the middle of his second round which probably took him out of contention to win this tournament but I fancy he will see off his playing partner Brian Harman on Saturday.

Harman has really struggled this week which is a bit of a surprise I must admit but he isn’t used to making it this far in a season and it could be that he has run out of gas after such a lengthy and emotional campaign. Although I don’t think he can win the tournament now, Kuchar is the home town lad so he is likely to have enough to play for to see off Harman in this third round.

Justin Thomas vs Paul Casey

Match tees off at 19.35 BST

The final group out onto the golf course sees the serial winner Justin Thomas taking on a man who is looking for a first win of the campaign in Paul Casey and I like the American to push on over the course of the third round.

Thomas is the real deal to me now. He is possibly the best driver in the world and I don’t say that lightly. He hits it a mile and very rarely is he wayward off the tee but the biggest improvement in him has been his iron play and his temperament. Casey has been top class for a while now but he has too many bad patches in him which hampers him when it comes to winning events. One of those here will be too much to recover from over the course of the 18 holes. I like Thomas in this pairing.
