2017 US Open Golf – Final Round Betting Preview

There is one round left of the US Open and it promises to be a fantastic night of golf with a bunched leaderboard all looking to seal the second major title of the year. The USGA has continued to allow players to score and we’ve seen a wonderful spectacle because of it and that isn’t likely to change on Sunday.

Round 3 Recap

Brian Harman stole a match on the field on Saturday when he moved to 12 under, one shot ahead of Justin Thomas, who fired a fantastic 63, Brooks Koepka and Tommy Fleetwood with Rickie Fowler a shot further back on 10 under. Si Woo Kim then sits on nine under while Russell Henley and Patrick Reed are among those just four back on eight under par.

Betting wise we enjoyed a good Saturday with Eddie Pepperell and SI Woo Kim far too good for their opponents but we hit the wall with Paul Casey whose cocky and confident demeanour came crashing down to earth in style.

Sunday 2 Balls

The conditions are set to be their toughest on Sunday with winds up to 20mph being forecast. That should finally give this course some teeth. I’m hoping the wind really gusts as that would bring Brandt Snedeker back into the game from five back but time will tell. This could be won by anyone so I’m just going to focus on a couple of two ball bets for Sunday.

Matthew Fitzpatrick vs Jim Furyk

Match tees off at 18.31 BST

With the rain that has been around after the third round we can expect this course to play softer early on and with that it will play even longer so Jim Furyk is likely to struggle on Sunday. He managed to cope on Saturday when the course was set up shorter but it will be as long as it has been all week on Sunday and any lack of length will be exposed.

Matthew Fitzpatrick isn’t the longest on tour but he can get it out there when he needs to and should be able to cope better with the conditions. We know the Englishman has prowess in the wind after he won the Nordea Masters last year and in these conditions on Sunday I expect him to outscore a Jim Furyk who has done wonderfully well to sit this far up the leaderboard given his form going in.

Si Woo Kim vs Rickie Fowler

Match tees off at 20.32 BST

It could be argued that the match of the final round is the one between the Players champion Si Woo Kim and The Honda Classic champion Rickie Fowler which is the third last group out on the golf course. These two are both very much in the deep end of this thing so will be worth following.

I’m not convinced Fowler is anywhere near the top of his game and with this course likely to be set up long and as tough as it can be for the final round that isn’t good for him and neither are the battle scars he has. Fowler was in a similar position to this at Augusta and never got going in the final round and I fear a repeat here.

Si Woo Kim is competing at the business end of a major for the first time but the way he shot clear at Sawgrass last month tells me the magnitude of the evening won’t faze him. Whether he is good enough to give some of those above him two and three shot starts and beat them I’m not sure but he can see off Fowler at least.
