2017 US Open Tennis – Day 10 Betting Preview

The quarter finals of the US Open conclude on another mouth-watering day of action inside the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday. It is a day which sees both world number one’s on court as well as a tasty repeat of the 2009 men’s final as the tournament looks ready to crank up a notch.

Day 9 Recap

I type this preview between the day and night sessions but so far there have been a comfortable win for Pablo Carreno Busta and a hard fought win for Sloane Stephens with the night session to come which promises much.

We have had one of our day nine bets settled thus far and it was a winner as Stephens needed a third set tiebreak to come past Anastasija Sevastova which saw the 21.5 games line comfortably covered. That win also brought in our 10/1 quarter bet on the American too.

Day Session

Karolina Pliskova vs Coco Vandeweghe

The world number one Karolina Pliskova gets the action underway on Wednesday when she takes on the powerful American player Coco Vandeweghe. Pliskova is two wins away from holding on to her number one spot while Vandweghe is looking for a place in a second major semi-final.

I think it is fair to say that Pliskova has not hit top form in this tournament yet but she remains a danger before a powerful serve and a heavy forehand. Those same attributes belong to her opponent too so this match could well be decided on who can protect their weakness the best.

Their three previous meetings all went to a tiebreak in the first set and I’m expecting close sets in this match too. I would imagine with her big match experience the Czech might see it through in the end but I firmly believe we will go beyond 22.5 games before we get there.

Rafael Nadal vs Andrey Rublev

The first men’s match of Wednesday sees the number one in the world Rafael Nadal taking on the only unseeded player left in the tournament in Andrey Rublev in a real David vs Goliath contest.

I don’t think it would be unfair to suggest that Nadal has not played his best in this tournament but at the same time he played his best so far in the previous round. Rublev has already taken care of Grigor Dimitrov and David Goffin this week but this is another step up completely. I expect Nadal to win but whether he does it in three sets or four I can’t quite decide so I’ll sit this one out.

Night Session

Madison Keys vs Kaia Kanepi

Two what you could call surprise packages meet in this last of the women’s quarter finals with a place in the last four on Thursday night a very lucrative prize for the winner. These two have only met once in the past which Kanepi won in straight sets.

Keys has had to go the long route in the last two matches but she has made it past a couple of competent opponents whereas Kanepi has bludgeoned her way through the draw although she did have to qualify for the tournament so matches could be catching up with her soon. This could become a survival of the fittest so I wouldn’t really like to call who will win. I’d favour Keys but she often plays much better as an underdog than a favourite so I’ll leave this one alone too.

Roger Federer vs Juan Martin del Potro

The match of the entire day on Wednesday is this repeat of the 2009 final in which Juan Martin del Potro beat Roger Federer in a fantastic fifth set to put himself down in the history books. If this match is even half as good as that one then it will be something special.

I don’t think it will be that good though. Federer looks to be playing as well now as he has been throughout the year after a couple of sticky matches to begin with while as much as I love the guy del Potro isn’t the player he was eight years ago. Worse still for the Argentine, he comes into this off the back of a five set epic which would have taken plenty of getting over.

We can be sure del Potro will give a good account of himself. The bloke has no quit in him but he’s up against a maestro in tip top form and I believe Federer will get this one done before a 38th game comes along.
