2017 US Open Tennis – Day 5 Betting Preview

We are into the third round at the US Open on Friday with the bottom halves of both singles draws being played down to the last 16 along with the three doubles events continuing. The weather is set to be decent enough so we should be in for another good day of tennis at Flushing Meadows.

Day 4 Recap

It was a day of lengthy matches and surprise results once again on Thursday. Roger Federer, Gael Monfils and David Goffin needed a deciding set to come through while Dominic Thiem was taken to four. Grigor Dimitrov didn’t even get that far. He was beaten in straight sets and joined Barbora Strycova and Daria Gavrilova in heading out of the tournament.

Unfortunately while the previous two days were excellent ones betting wise the same couldn’t be said on Thursday as all three bets lost and in truth barely gave us a run for our money despite facing opponents below their best. We’ll look to make up for that on Friday.

Arthur Ashe Stadium

Petra Kvitova opens up the action on the main court on Friday when she faces Caroline Garcia before a couple of unseeded men take to the court as Denis Shapovalov goes up against Kyle Edmund in a repeat of that infamous Davis Cup tie from earlier in the year. The day session draws to a close with Venus Williams taking on Maria Sakkari.

The men’s match opens up the night session for the first time this year when John Isner faces Mischa Zverev before the final match of the day sees Maria Sharapova back on court. She plays Sofia Kenin.

Louis Armstrong Stadium

Nicolas Mahut and Pablo Carreno Busta get the gig to open the action on the second court before the American player Sloane Stephens is back on court. She plays Ashleigh Barty before the Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza takes on Magdalena Rybarikova. The last match of the day sees Sam Querrey facing Radu Albot.

Grandstand

There is a men’s match to begin things on this court too. Diego Schwartzman and Marin Cilic line up in an all-seeded battle. Kevin Anderson and Borna Coric follow them in what should be a tasty match up before a doubles match involving Martina Hingis. The last match is between Anastasija Sevastova facing Donna Vekic.

Court 17

The other show court with singles matches on it is Court 17 where an Italian battle between Thomas Fabbiano and Paolo Lorenzi gets everything underway. Lucas Pouille then goes up against Mikhail Kukushkin before the day finishes with a couple of doubles matches.

Court 5

The only other court where there is singles action is Court 5. Doubles start and finish the schedule on this court but in between there is a pair of singles games which sees Ekaterina Makarova taking on Carla Suarez Navarro and Aleksandra Krunic facing Julia Goerges.

It is doubles all the way on the outside courts but while those events are catching up with the schedule I’m not going to look too deep into those matches just yet.

Men’s Betting

I’m going with a pair of bets in the men’s draw on Friday. The first of those is in the second match on Ashe when the Next Gen pair of Denis Shapovalov and Kyle Edmund meet. These two have met twice this year with a win each but Edmund’s came when the Canadian hadn’t broken through. He very much has now and I expect Shapovalov to come through this with a little in hand. He has tasted Ashe already this week which could be big and he is holding his serve nicely. As a left hander he can attack the weak Edmund backhand and that can be the key to success for the new star in the making. I’m surprised he is only being asked to cover 2.5 games but I fancy he will do it comfortably.

Kevin Anderson and Borna Coric have both been going well this week. Anderson has cruised through the draw so far while Coric took care of the form horse Alex Zverev in the previous round so their confidence should be pretty high. I’m expecting a tight match here. Anderson is looking to get back to where he was while Coric carries this big reputation but hasn’t done it in the big events yet to justify it. Four sets should see us safely beyond 38.5 games here given how well the pair serve.

Women’s Betting

I’m taking two in this draw as well and we get going with the opening match on Ashe as Caroline Garcia takes on Petra Kvitova in a match I fancy the French star to win. Apart from 20 minutes in the first set of the second round Garcia has been on fire this week and would barely have lost a game. Kvitova was all over Cornet in the second round but in a 62 61 win she only hit four more winners than unforced errors which suggests to me she was largely helped along the way by her opponent. I’m not sure that will be the case here though. Garcia has won the last two between these two so she won’t lack for belief and I reckon she can make that a hat trick here.

Donna Vekic is really beginning to come of age. She won in Nottingham earlier in the year and then had that absolute epic with Jo Konta at Wimbledon in a match she did nothing wrong in. That form has arrived here too as she has only dropped five games so far and took the perfectly competent Shuai Peng to the cleaners in the previous round. She now faces Anastasija Sevastova who has made harder work of an easier draw. The Latvian rarely goes beyond this round of a Slam and I don’t think she’ll go any further here either.
