2017 Wimbledon Tennis – Day 2 Betting Preview

The first round of the Wimbledon tournament concludes in both singles draws at SW19 on Tuesday when the players who haven’t yet got their campaign underway do so in the famous London event.

Among the stars in action on the second day of play are Angelique Kerber, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Caroline Wozniacki and plenty more besides. We should be in for another top quality day of action.

Day 1 Recap

There weren’t many shocks on the opening day of the tournament although the one which did develop we predicted as Stan Wawrinka was beaten by Daniil Medvedev in four sets. Unfortunately that was the only bet of ours which won on Monday so we have a bit of work to do to get in profit for the event.

On the grass courts there were comfortable wins for Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Jo Konta, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Kei Nishikori while Venus Williams and Petra Kvitova made winning returns to SW19 too. Nick Kyrgios, Ivo Karlovic and Fernando Verdasco were among the seeds to fall.

Centre Court

As ever there are three matches on Centre Court on Tuesday. The first of those sees the world number one Angelique Kerber in action. She faces Irina Falconi before all eyes will be on Novak Djokovic when he takes on Martin Klizan. Roger Federer rounds off the day when he goes up against Alexandr Dolgopolov.

Court 1

There is a decent line up on Court 1 on Tuesday too. The 2016 beaten finalist Milos Raonic is first up when he plays Jan-Lennard Struff. Eastbourne winner Karolina Pliskova is second up against Evgeniya Rodina before the final match of the day which sees Dominic Thiem taking on Vasek Pospisil.

Court 2

Former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro opens play up on this court. He faces Thanasi Kokkinakis before Agnieszka Radwanska plays Jelena Jankovic. Tomas Berdych is third on court when he faces a potentially dangerous Jeremy Chardy and then the finale on this court sees Svetlana Kuznetsova taking on Ons Jabeur.

Court 3

This court begins with an all-British clash between Kyle Edmund and Alexander Ward. Former finalist Garbine Muguruza is second up against Ekaterina Alexandrova before the man of the moment in the men’s draw Alexander Zverev takes on Evgeny Donskoy. The action is rounded off by Kiki Madenovic playing Pauline Parmentier in an all-French tussle.

Best of the Rest

As ever in the early stages of Wimbledon those with ground passes will see some good action on the lesser courts. Richard Gasquet takes on David Ferrer on Court 12 with Grigor Dimitrov and Lucie Safarova also on that court while Coco Vandeweghe and Gael Monfils are on Court 18.

Jack Sock, John Isner, Daria Gavrilova, Feliciano Lopez and Caroline Wozniacki are just some of the seeded players scattered around the grounds on a packed out Tuesday.

Men’s Betting

I’m going with three bets on the men’s side on Tuesday on what I see as being a day of shocks as far as the odds suggest. The main one of those can come over on Court 1 where Dominic Thiem has to be vulnerable against the big serving aggressive game that Vasek Pospisil has which is perfect for grass. The Canadian was a quarter finalist here two years ago and while he has lost his way since then he appears to be back on it now and has enjoyed a decent grass court season. Thiem continues to look all over the shop on this surface and a shade more than 2/1 on Pospisil is hard to ignore.

Another man who doesn’t enjoy grass is Borna Coric. There are times he doesn’t enjoy any surface. He has a fuse which could bring the National Grid down when it explodes and I fancy the all court game of Ryan Harrison could extract that. If you look at the bare results in singles Harrison hasn’t been up to much but he actually played ok at Queens but ran into an insanely good Grigor Dimitrov. Although his singles results haven’t been up to much Harrison won the French Open doubles recently so he should be buzzing and I think he has the game to see off a Coric who has only ever won one match here.

Robin Haase has been enjoying a good grass court season with wins over David Ferrer, Dominic Thiem and Nicolas Mahut and he can see off the highly rated but yet to deliver anything of note Frances Tiafoe. The American played in qualifying for Queens and in Eastbourne and lost his first match in both events. You have to go all the way back to Miami in March for the last time he won on the main tour. Whether he does it in straight sets or in four I expect the Dutchman to come through with plenty in hand here.

Women’s Betting

There is just the one which gets my attention in the women’s draw on Tuesday. I expect this draw to open right up before the weekend but not so much on Tuesday. I can’t believe Ekaterina Makarova is the outsider to see off Alison Van Uytvanck. The Belgian did well to come through qualifying but she was taken the distance by Katie Dunn along the way and Makarova is a few levels above her. The Russian has an ideal game for grass with that big leftie serve and some heavy ground strokes and although Van Uytvanck won a few matches at Ilkley prior to Wimbledon qualifying she never beat anyone of note there either. I think Makarova will be too good for her.
