2017 Wimbledon Tennis – Day 5 Betting Preview

We have reached the third round of the Wimbledon Championships and on Friday there will be places in the second week up for grabs for all the singles players in action. As ever at this stage of the tournament there are big names everywhere you look on what should be a great day.

Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Jo Konta, Venus Williams, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Jelena Ostapenko are among the stars on show on Friday.

Day 4 Recap

It was the first day of carnage for the really big names on Thursday when Karolina Pliskova, Juan Martin del Potro, Kiki Mladenovic and Jack Sock all made an exit from the tournament. There were comfortable wins for the likes of Roger Federer, Gael Monfils, Novak Djokovic, Caroline Wozniacki, Garbine Muguruza and Svetlana Kuznetsova.

In terms of bets on Thursday we had two winners and another two losers in which we were one more service hold from a winner so that was a frustrating day and something we will hope to put right on Friday.

Centre Court

Once again it is a day for the Britons on Centre Court. Heather Watson opens up the action when she takes on Victoria Azarenka before Rafael Nadal goes up against Karen Khachenov. The court comes to an end with Andy Murray continuing the defence of his title against Fabio Fognini of Italy.

Court 1

There is a Brit on show on this court as well but not immediately. Queens finalist Marin Cilic is first up. He takes on the heavy handed American Steve Johnson before Jo Konta goes up against Maria Sakkari. The final match on this court sees Naomi Osaka going up against former winner Venus Williams.

Court 2

It is down to the Brits to open up play on this court too as Aljaz Bedene is first up against Gilles Muller. Shuai Peng and the French Open finalist Simona Halep follow them before Jelena Ostapenko, the winner in Paris, takes on Camila Giorgi before the final match of the day sees Jo-Wilfried Tsonga taking on Sam Querrey.

Court 3

There are two singles matches on this court on Friday. Play begins with Kei Nishikori taking on the Spanish player Roberto Bautista Agut before the ladies fourth seed Elina Svitolina faces Carina Witthoeft before a doubles match closes things off.

Best of the Rest

Once again there are some decent names to watch on the outside courts on Friday. Dominika Cibulkova, Caroline Garcia and Kevin Anderson are among those in singles action around the grounds.

Men’s Betting

There is just the one match which interests me in the men’s draw on Friday. It is the first match on Court 2 as Aljaz Bedene goes up against Gilles Muller in what looks like being a lengthy match. The two met in Holland a few weeks ago and that went to a deciding set and I wouldn’t be surprised if this match goes that way too. However many sets there are I expect them to be close. Bedene has played four tiebreaks and an extended set in this tournament while Muller has a tiebreak, an extended set and two 7-5 sets. I don’t see many breaks of serve here so a 39.5 games line looks very low. Four sets should cover this.

Women’s Betting

I’m going with two in the women’s event. The last time Heather Watson saw Centre Court from a playing point of view she was running Serena Williams to the brink and I would imagine that will inspire her to perform well again when she takes on Victoria Azarenka on Friday. Azarenka isn’t quite Serena and no matter how good she was she has to be hitting the empty tank after three matches in a week so soon into her comeback. Watson is playing some brilliant tennis at the minute and is overpriced at 2/1.

Jelena Ostapenko shocked the tennis world when she won the French Open but she has struggled in this tournament. She has been three sets in both encounters against inferior opposition. Camila Giorgi has been taken the distance twice too but she has faced two good level opponents and blown them away with a barrage of heavy hitting. There is still too much of an all or nothing element to Ostapenko’s game for my liking so the Italian is worth a go here.
