2017 World Grand Prix Darts – Semi-Finals Betting Preview

A really intriguing and shock laden World Grand Prix has reached the semi-final stage where we are set for two nervy but dramatic matches inside the Citywest Hotel in Dublin on Friday night.

After Robert Thornton lost on Thursday night we are now guaranteed a new champion on Saturday and unless Mensur Suljovic goes on to win we will have a new major title winner too so for all four men the opportunity is huge. We’re up to the best of seven sets for these semi-finals which should assist with the quality.

Simon Whitlock vs Mensur Suljovic

Two men who were probably considered dark horses heading into the week have made it through to the semi-final and they will hope to go at least one step further as well. Both men are experienced in big matches now so this should be a good game to watch.

Both players had tough battles in the opening round but have largely cruised through the draw since then. You would have to acknowledge that Whitlock has had a soft schedule while Suljovic has had the tougher route to this stage but that doesn’t matter now.

I’m effectively already on Suljovic at a little over 12/1 for this match having backed him outright and I’m happy to let that ride out and hope the Austrian seals the first half of that bet with a win here.

John Henderson vs Daryl Gurney

The surprise package of the tournament has made it to the semi-final and now John Henderson will face the remaining Irishman, Daryl Gurney, who is clearly enjoying playing in front of him home crowds.

Henderson has seen off van Gerwen, Norris and Barneveld to make it here so nobody can say he is here by fluke. Gurney has not had the top level names on his record since the opening round when he took care of Adrian Lewis but he has played some good darts to make it to this stage.

I think we will see a close semi-final here. Henderson is playing some brilliant darts this week while we saw what the event means to Gurney after his quarter final win. Through heart and fight as much as quality I think we’ll go beyond 5.5 sets in this one.
