2018-19 Premier League – Man City vs Wolves Betting Preview

There is one more Premier League match remaining in the latest set of fixtures and it takes place on Monday night, in a huge evening for the defending champions Manchester City. They host Wolves in probably the biggest Monday Night Football of the season so far.

City head into the match seven points behind Liverpool at the top of the table after the Reds edged out Brighton on Saturday and anything but a win here would make defending their title very difficult. Wolves have a free hit and have shown all season that they are dangerous against the big boys.

Manchester City

City certainly aren’t lacking for goals heading into this contest having found the back of the net on 16 occasions in their last two matches. Of course those encounters were against opponents much weaker than Wolverhampton Wanderers but confidence is a big thing in sport and their attacking players should be laced with it after the last week or so.

City are generally pretty good at home but there is no understating the pressure that they are under in this match so it will be interesting to see if they play in their normal entertaining way or whether there is even the slightest semblance of caution in their play. They can’t afford the latter but it would be so natural for it to creep in given the importance of the night.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

While it will undoubtedly be great times to be a Wolverhampton Wanderers fan at the minute, there must be a slight frustration with their ability to trouble, and indeed take down the big boys, but then struggle and even come up short against the perceived weaker sides in the league. They don’t need to worry about that here however as the size of the task is pretty obvious.

Wolves like to play a counter attacking game so they are going to need to live on the edge a fair few times if they are going to come out on top in this one, but they are an extremely organised bunch who have proven to be hard to break down for many of the top sides in the division thus far. They will need to be clinical at the other end as chances are likely to be infrequent.

Team News

Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany are both expected to return for this match having sat out the cup wins last week. Fernandinho is another who is poised to start having been rested while Fabian Delph is also available.

Wolves are set to recall all their heavy hitters who were rested for the win over Liverpool in the FA Cup last week. Rui Patricio and Matt Doherty are among the players who will return while Diogo Jota could also start.

Betting

While I accept that Manchester City are rightful favourites in this match, I’m not sure they are two goal favourites in it. Wolverhampton Wanderers haven’t been beaten by two goals all season and their record on the road to the big teams is extremely good. They went to Arsenal and drew 1-1 and secured the same scoreline at Old Trafford. They also beat Tottenham 3-1 at Wembley so they shouldn’t be overlooked.

I still fancy City will win the match but it is all about just winning the game and if Wolves can hold out for a while the tension will increase and the encounter could get stretched which would play into the hands of the visitors. Wolves are tight and organised and while City can destroy anyone there is enough evidence to suggest that Wolves +2.25 on the Asian lines is the way to attack this one.
