2018-19 Premier League – Man Utd vs Tottenham Betting Preview

The biggest game of the Premier League weekend has been saved for the Monday Night Football when Manchester United host Tottenham Hotspur in a clash between two perceived title challengers who have had plenty of critics heading into the campaign.

United have been rotten so far but have a win and a defeat to their name while Spurs take a 100% record to Old Trafford with them after successive wins to open up their season despite a lack of transfer activity.

Manchester United

Heading into the season Manchester United were subject to their transfer linen being washed in public and Jose Mourinho made it quite clear where he stood on that. That looks to have lingered into the campaign itself because although they beat Leicester they were second best and laboured for large periods and they were truly dreadful at Brighton last week.

To be fair to United they were without a number of key players for those two matches but the hoohah around Mourinho can’t possibly be helpful. His criticism of his players and the pressure put on some of his stars by pundits in the media won’t be helping too. That said, if there is one thing we know about a Mourinho side it is that they will have a siege mentality and come out fighting.

Tottenham Hotspur

There was a lot of talk about the lack of transfer activity at White Hart Lane in the summer but there wasn’t so much said about the fact that actually Tottenham didn’t really need anyone other than to freshen things up for the sake of it. It does look like that criticism has fired Spurs up because they have begun the season very professionally.

You could argue that in Newcastle and Fulham, Tottenham have had a friendly start to the campaign but we have seen them start slowly in the past. They might not have been brilliant in both of those matches but they got the job done and to be fair at this stage of the season that is all anyone can really ask for, especially in a World Cup year.

Team News

Manchester United are expected to have Nemanja Matic and Alexis Sanchez back for this match which could be crucial. Antonio Valencia is another who is expected to return but Diogo Dalot lacks fitness.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino will need to decide on whether Hugo Lloris starts after his drink driving arrest over the weekend. All eyes will be on whether Toby Alderweireld keeps his place in the side while Victor Wanyama needs more training and Son Heung-min is away on international duty.

Betting

The odds look to have taken United’s loss last week into account and overcompensated for it. While it was a poor defeat they are not the first team to find the Amex a tough place to go and they won’t be the last either. Playing at Old Trafford is completely different and they are a much better side on their own patch.

Credit goes to Tottenham for a good start to the season but this is their toughest test thus far by an absolute distance. Spurs have lost their last five matches at Old Trafford and last year was the only time they have scored a goal in that run too. Manchester United get results at home and I think they’ll do that again here.
