2018-19 Premier League – Top Goalscorer Betting Preview

The last of the ante-post markets to get stuck into before the Premier League season gets into full swing is the top goalscorer market. This is always a popular ditty to get knees deep into and this year is unlikely to be any different.

The Favourites

Harry Kane is 3/1 to get the Golden Boot back this season. In fairness to him he did nothing wrong last term he just ran into a monster season from Mo Salah. Kane for me is the best centre-forward in the world right now and with there being no reason why Tottenham will weaken in any way I see nothing to suggest Kane won’t be challenging again. I’m no backer of short prices in this market though as one lengthy injury and we’re toast.

Mo Salah is 11/2 to keep hold of the Golden Boot. The question on the lips of everyone is whether he is a one-season wonder or not. We are about to find out but I just wonder if he will spend a bit more time on the sidelines with Xherdan Shaqiri around and with Liverpool wanting to compete on four fronts this term. It is hard to see him repeating his feats of last season.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been a regular goalscorer wherever he has gone and he should be able to thrive under Umai Emery and if he does then the 13/2 on him to lead the goal charts could be value with the quality of ammunition he will be getting. Sergio Aguero is a former winner and he certainly shouldn’t be ruled out at 15/2 although the concern is that Gabriel Jesus might get some of his game time. With that in mind the 16/1 on him offers little appeal too.

The Contenders

Romelu Lukaku had more expected of him than the return he delivered for Manchester United last season. He is not going to go short of chances this time around and if he can convert enough of them you would think he will be competitive at 10/1 but that remains a big if in fairness. There is certainly a bit of value there for those who believe in the Belgian.

Alexandre Lacazette didn’t play as much as he would have liked in the second half of the campaign for Arsenal yet he still notched 14 goals so if Emery goes with two up top then the Frenchman shouldn’t be ruled out at 25/1. Roberto Firmino is always likely to be in the goals in that Liverpool side but how big his share of them will be remains to be seen. I’d want a trifle more than 28/1 I think.

Chelsea pair Alvaro Morata and Eden Hazard are 33/1 and 40/1 respectively. The chances are that the Blues are going to score more goals under Maurizio Sarri but the big issue with backing either is not knowing if they will still be at Stamford Bridge when the calendars turn over to September. I can’t get involved in either.

Betting

I’ll take a couple of decent prices in this market. Unai Emery has been used to working with two strikers or advanced players so I fancy Alexandre Lacazette will see a good deal of game time. I think he is a very decent finisher and while it would be better if he was to be on penalties, I still think he’ll spend plenty of time in the box when he is on the pitch. We don’t know exactly how much time he’ll get but I’ll pay to see at 25/1.

Aleksandar Mitrovic fit in very nicely at Fulham in the second half of last season and his goals were a real force in them getting promoted. Naturally it will be harder in the Premier League but I think Fulham will be fine with creating chances and going forward and attacking. Mitrovic showed he can play at the highest level in the summer when he had a good World Cup for Serbia and at 100/1 I’ll pay to see just how many times he can find the back of the net.
