2018-19 Sky Bet League 1 – Accrington Stanley vs Luton Town Betting Preview

There is one match in Sky Bet League 1 on Saturday afternoon to close out the first half of the Easter period double header and after the results from Friday there is suddenly a little more riding on it as the top two from League 2 last season meet at the Wham Stadium when Accrington Stanley host Luton Town.

There has been a bit of spice between these two teams over the last 12 months and after the fallout from their encounter at Kenilworth Road there could well be an edge to this match so Sky Sports Football could be the place to be for the 5.30 kick off.

Accrington Stanley

When Accrington Stanley went to Luton in the reverse fixture between these two in October they sat fourth in the table, comfortably above the Hatters, but barely a win since then has seen them plummet down the table and they could yet be heading back to League 2 at the earliest opportunity. They gave themselves a lifeline with a win last week but with no winnable game to come on paper they remain vulnerable.

Acccrington picked up just their second win in 11 matches last week but having seen results go for them on Good Friday, they can have a bit of a go here as they search for the win which will all but keep them in the division. If they are to get that it would be helpful if their attacking players could chip in with some goals after a defender got both their strikes in last week’s win.

Luton Town

A miracle occurred last week as Luton Town were beaten for the first time in six months. They will be out to ensure that they do not suffer the same fate here as they look to restore their five point lead and move to within a win or so of promotion to the Championship at the first time of asking. The Hatters have been the standout team in the division since around October and have the perfect platform to showcase that here.

Generally when you are the leading scorers in the league and have the second best defensive record within it you are doing something right and despite all the upheaval over the course of the campaign, Luton look set for promotion. Were they to win here they could achieve their goal as early as Tuesday night so Town shouldn’t lack for motivation, not that they would against this lot anyway.

Team News

Accrington Stanley boss John Coleman is expected to stick with the same side which got the much needed win over Walsall last week even though his forwards were unable to find the net in that encounter.

Luton Town forward James Collins was suspended for the defeat to Charlton last week but he is back here. Andrew Shinnie is suspended however. Danny Hylton and Alan McCormack join Dan Potts and Glen Rea on the sidelines but Kazenga LuaLua is fit to return.

Betting

I’ve gone on record as saying that any time you can get Luton Town are attractive prices this season they should be taken and I’m not going to change my mind here Whether bookmakers expect a slump now their unbeaten run has come to an end or not I’m not sure but the 8/11 on an away win is decent enough to me given that the Hatters would have won the last five league meetings but for a shocking non call on a handball in the box in the match between the two at Kenilworth Road last season. Accrington winger Sean McConville might be surprised Luton are going so well but nobody else seems to be and given that Rochdale, Southend, Fleetwood and Bristol Rovers have all left the Wham Stadium with something this season, Luton should be expected to win here.

You have to go all the way back to January for the last time Accrington kept a clean sheet in the league and with the top scorers in town here it would take a leap of faith to expect them to keep one in this match as well but Luton have suddenly only kept one clean sheet in five themselves and have lost their defensive shield in Alan McCormack. With a result a necessity for both teams here this has the potential to open right up with an early goal. Twice in the last 24 months Luton have beaten Accrington 4-1 and there was a 2-1 in between them so over 2.5 looks worth a shout too.
