2018-19 Sky Bet League 1 – Good Friday Matches Betting Preview

The Easter weekend is here which means that there is a packed schedule in Sky Bet League 1 over the next few days, beginning with an almost full round of matches in the division on Good Friday, where so much is at stake.

Literally everything is still up for grabs in the third tier heading into the Easter double header so there is a lot to focus on here, and to help with that two of the 11 matches on Friday are live on TV in the UK.

Coventry City v Bradford City (13.00)

Oxford United v Charlton Athletic (13.00)

AFC Wimbledon v Bristol Rovers

Barnsley v Shrewsbury Town

Burton Albion v Portsmouth

Fleetwood Town v Peterborough United

Gillingham v Plymouth Argyle

Rochdale v Wycombe Wanderers

Scunthorpe United v Blackpool

Walsall v Southend United

Big Matches

With the leaders Luton Town not playing until Saturday there is the chance for second placed Barnsley to close the gap at the top when they play host to Shrewsbury Town. Sunderland also have the same opportunity when they take on Doncaster Rovers in the second of the live TV matches with Portsmouth taking part in the other game on the box. They head to Burton who the two sides above them have already slipped up against.

Best of the Rest

Charlton Athletic are sneaking up on the outside and could yet gatecrash the top two. In order to do that they have to win at Oxford United while at the other end of the table it is a massive afternoon for Walsall and Southend United in a true meaning of the term six pointer. The same can be said for Rochdale and Wycombe Wanderers when they meet at Spotland while Gillingham and Plymouth meet with the winner avoiding being sucked in at the bottom of the table. Bradford City could be relegated if they lose at Coventry and results go against them.

Betting

I’ll go with a couple of bets over the course of Friday. The first one comes in the early kick off at the Ricoh Arena where I expect Coventry City to take care of Bradford City. Coventry haven’t always been the best at home but they should be buoyed by that epic win at Sunderland last week where they went and scored five. Bradford are heading tamely towards League 2. They have only won one of their last twelve, losing their last six and in those six games they’ve only found the net in two of them. Coventry are no doubt motivated by their problems off the pitch and I think they can get the better of the Bantams here.

The two form sides meet at the Pirelli Stadium where having dented the promotion hopes of Barnsley and Sunderland in recent weeks, Burton Albion will look to do the same against Portsmouth in front of the TV cameras. We only have to go back to the first half of the season and the Carabao Cup run that the Brewers had to see that they raise their game against the better sides and recent results have confirmed that. To be fair to Portsmouth after their January wobble they are buzzing again but I’m not so sure Burton should be such clear outsiders here. It is the nature of this promotion race that one of Barnsley, Sunderland and Portsmouth will slip up on Friday. I’ll take it to be Pompey. Burton can get a result here.
