We find out who will face Sunderland in the Sky Bet League 1 play-off final on Friday night when Charlton Athletic host Doncaster Rovers in the second leg of the second semi-final. Charlton head into the night looking to protect a 2-1 lead from the first game.
They say home advantage in the second leg is vital, and Charlton will hope that is the case, but they might have noticed all five home sides second time round in these play-offs so far have all seen their season end in front of their own fans. That will give Doncaster confidence and belief.
Charlton Athletic
A sustained run of form saw Charlton Athletic finish the season so well that they ended up third in the League One table and they continued their positive play with a 2-1 win at the Keepmoat Stadium to set themselves up perfectly for this second leg. Many judges had them as the favourites to win the play-offs heading in and they certainly will be now after the way they have been playing.
The issue the Addicks have here is whether to stick or twist and that has been a theme for many of the sides who have led going into these second legs and you wouldn’t really say any of them have been decisive with their plans. Charlton should look to go out and win this match but with the prize so big that is not always easy for them to do.
Doncaster Rovers
It goes without saying that Doncaster Rovers would not have wanted to lose the first leg but if there is a positive to come from that loss it comes in the form of them knowing what they have to do here. There is no issues about sticking or twisting. Rovers can attack this match knowing that they have to win and plan and prepare accordingly. They will only have decisions to make should they get themselves into a position where they lead in the tie.
In order for that to happen, Grant McCann’s men are going to have to commit a few more men forward and get their creative players on the ball a little more. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them activate a man behind a front two and get their full-backs forward. At some point they will have to take a risk or two but they have a potent marksman which always gives them a chance.
Team News
Charlton Athletic have no new injury concerns for this tie but once again they are without Igor Vetokele will be missing with the thigh issue that kept him out of the opening game in Yorkshire on Sunday.
Doncaster Rovers are understood to have a fully fit squad to choose from here. Tommy Rowe will be pushing for a start while Ben Whiteman will be hoping to be involved after recovering from a recent injury.

Betting
I like the idea of over 2.5 goals in this second leg. Obviously it landed in the first match and there is even more chance of it landing here at The Valley with Doncaster having to come out and attack to get themselves back into the tie. I know from witnessing it first hand last month that Charlton are a really good side at home and I’m sure they will be looking to get on the front foot and put this tie to bed as early as possible.
Both teams have some pace in their forward line and we have two of the higher scoring forwards in the league on show in this contest so assuming the chances are created we don’t need to worry about having anyone to convert them. Just the way this tie is set up I think we’re set for plenty of goals in this second leg.
