It is the penultimate full fixture list in Sky Bet League 1 this weekend and it looks like the date where fates can be sealed for a number of the teams chasing big things over the remainder of the season. We kick off with 11 matches on a strong Saturday card.
We could see our first side promoted on Saturday while at least one more is expected to suffer the ignominy of the drop while that battle for the play-off spot could become a little clearer over the course of the afternoon too.
Saturday’s fixtures are as follows:
Accrington Stanley v Plymouth Argyle
AFC Wimbledon v Wycombe Wanderers
Barnsley v Blackpool
Burton Albion v Luton Town
Fleetwood Town v Bristol Rovers
Gillingham v Charlton Athletic
Oxford United v Doncaster Rovers
Rochdale v Southend United
Scunthorpe United v Bradford City
Sunderland v Portsmouth
Walsall v Peterborough United
Big Matches
The big match of the afternoon comes from the Stadium of Light where Portsmouth in third will look to keep their promotion destiny in their own hands when they head north to take on Sunderland, who themselves must win to stay relevant in the race for automatic promotion. Anything but a win for either and it could be the play-offs for them. Luton will get promoted if they better Barnsley or Portsmouth’s result. The Hatters face Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium while Barnsley play host to a Blackpool team who have nothing to play for.
Best of the Rest
There are two big matches at the bottom of the table as Scunthorpe United take on relegated Bradford looking to give themselves one last shot at surviving this term while AFC Wimbledon do likewise against a Wycombe Wanderers side who should now be safe after recent results. Plymouth Argyle make the long trip to Accrington needing to win while Walsall will be relegated if they lose at home to Peterborough United and results go against them. Rochdale host Southend in a clash between two sides who are not completely safe, the latter certainly isn’t and needs the points here.

Betting
A couple of other bets tempted me on Saturday but I’ll stick with just the two. I’ve mentioned in previous weeks about taking Luton Town whenever they are an attractive price and they are exactly that away to Burton Albion. The Hatters were crestfallen after conceding an injury time equaliser against Wimbledon in midweek in a match that if it was a boxing contest the ref wouldn’t have let go beyond three rounds such was Luton’s dominance. Generally though when this side suffers disappointment it bounces back in style and that is what I expect to happen here. Burton are no longer playing for anything and main forward Liam Boyce is one of a few injuries they are carrying. Luton are determined to get promoted on Saturday and they can do their part of the bargain by winning at the Pirelli Stadium.
Peterborough United chairman Darragh McAnthony might be playing down the chances of his side gate-crashing the play-offs but their destiny remains in their own hands in that if they can win their final three matches and score a few in the process too. The first of those comes at a Walsall side who look to have accepted their fate a while back and are doing little to even try to remain in the division. There has been a clear lack of fight from the Saddlers and even sacking the manager hasn’t worked. To be fair they have one of the lowest budgets in the league and are performing accordingly. I expect Peterborough to seal their fate here. Normally I would look for some draw cover but with the draw doing neither side any favours I’ll just take Posh to win.
