2018-19 Sky Bet League 1 – Saturday 6th April Matches Betting Preview

All but two of the teams in Sky Bet League 1 are in action on a busy Saturday afternoon in the third tier where events at both ends of the table could become a little clearer as we enter the home straight in the campaign.

The logjam at the bottom ensures plenty of competitive action at this stage of the season and with events at the top still up for grabs as well, this division is not going to have too many dead rubbers across the afternoon.

Saturday’s fixtures are as follows:

AFC Wimbledon v Accrington Stanley

Bradford City v Doncaster Rovers

Burton Albion v Barnsley

Fleetwood Town v Southend United

Luton Town v Blackpool

Peterborough United v Gillingham

Plymouth Argyle v Charlton Athletic

Rochdale v Sunderland

Shrewsbury Town v Scunthorpe United

Walsall v Oxford United

Wycombe Wanderers v Portsmouth

Big Matches

Luton Town will look to take another step towards Championship football next season when they play host to Blackpool with a bit of revenge on their mind after a play-off semi-final in which the Hatters suffered heartache a couple of seasons ago. Barnsley will look to fend off the chasing pack in second when they make the tricky trip to Burton Albion while Sunderland are taking an army of fans to Rochdale with them looking to close in on the Tykes. At the other end of the table there is a huge match between AFC Wimbledon and Accrington Stanley at Kingsmeadow.

Best of the Rest

Portsmouth will look to build on their Checkatrade Trophy success last weekend when they head to a Wycombe Wanderers side who are falling like a brick. Bradford City look to launch a very late attempt to stay up when they host Yorkshire rivals Doncaster Rovers while Walsall will look to come out of the bottom three when they host Oxford United. Southend begin life under Kevin Bond with a lengthy trip to Highbury Stadium to face Fleetwood Town with Charlton Athletic heading to Plymouth Argyle.

Betting

I’ve said to myself for a month or so now that while Luton Town are still needing points to be promoted I will take them to cover anything from a -1 Asian line and lower and they are a -1 on Saturday. That confidence is especially there when they are at Kenilworth Road where they have looked sublime all season. Blackpool are a tough side to beat but they have only scored 19 goals in 20 matches on their travels this term and have recently been beaten 3-0 at Burton and 4-0 at Bristol Rovers. If you don’t score against this Luton side you’re in trouble because they’ve failed to score just once at Kenilworth Road all season and that was against second placed Barnsley. Luton have to be taken on this line against almost anyone in the league on this ground.

I’ve been cursing myself for not taking on Accrington Stanley on Wednesday night ever since Sunderland took the lead in that match but I’m not making that mistake twice. Getting the run around in heavy conditions on Wednesday night and then having to take on a form side in AFC Wimbledon on the Saturday is less than ideal to say the least. To be fair in their current form the case for AFC Wimbledon was pretty obvious here anyway. I highlighted Accrington’s woes in midweek. AFC have won four of their last five and with a bit of draw cover look a good bet here.

Gillingham have impressed in this division in recent weeks and there is no reason why they can’t go to Peterborough and cause problems. The Gills have lost just once in their last seven matches while Peterborough have struggled in front of their own fans all season. Posh have lost six of their last nine and the three wins in that time were all against teams in or around the bottom six. This is the time in the season they fall away and with Gillingham looking strong and carrying a goal threat in Tom Eaves I’ll back them to avoid defeat here.
