2018 ATP Miami Open Tennis – Semi-Finals Betting Preview

It is semi-final day in the ATP Miami Open on Good Friday with the two matches both taking place on the Stadium Court on what should be a high class day of action. Roger Federer’s exit has really tightened up this tournament as we saw in the quarter finals when two of them went to a final set tiebreak. More tight tussles are expected on Friday.

Day 9 Recap

It was another high class day of action in Miami on Thursday with the first of the two matches being an absolute epic between Pablo Carreno Busta and Kevin Anderson. It went right to the final tiebreak with both men having match points before the Spaniard finally got over the line, much to the joy of our bank balance as we were on PCB at a very tasty price.

Unfortunately for our bets in the evening session Borna Coric fell one match short of bringing in his quarter bet when he went down in two tight sets to Alexander Zverev although in fairness to the German the scoreline probably flattered the young Croatian in many ways.

Juan Martin del Potro vs John Isner

The first semi-final sees two powerhouses in action and it will be interesting to see if Juan Martin del Potro is after any kind of revenge against John Isner. It was Isner who beat him in Paris last year and denied the Argentine the final spot at the o2 in London.

One thing we can safely say is both these men are playing excellent tennis right now. Isner’s last two performances have been two of his best for a long time while del Potro’s coolness under pressure against Raonic in the quarter final was that of a man who has now won his last 15 matches.

I’m expecting a really close match here not least because I expect the serve to totally dominate. Del Potro leads their head to head 6-3 but Isner’s three wins have come in their last five meetings. Generally there is a tiebreak or two when these two meet. Three of their last six have gone the distance and if this does too then over 25.5 games will fly in but it comes in with a pair of tiebreaks so I’m on the overs here.

Pablo Carreno Busta vs Alexander Zverev

The second semi-final contains a player who will have been expected to make it this far in Alexander Zverev and one who perhaps might not have been in Pablo Carreno Busta. That might be unfair on PCB though as he has now made the semis of Indian Wells, the US Open and here in the last 15 months.

I thought given all that went on in his quarter final against Kevin Anderson, Carreno Busta put in a really good performance and one of a man who is going to be a fixture at the top of this sport in the years to come. That said the last two performances of Alexander Zverev have been very strong and he is suddenly becoming a genuine contender for this title.

I think the magnitude of this match will ensure it is a relatively close battle. I think Carreno Busta has a little more variety to trouble Zverev than what Coric did and he has a better return game to get after the German’s serve. The same can be said the other way around so over 22.5 games looks a pretty obvious bet given the chances of a deciding set or two close sets at the very least.
