3.00 York

A good quality Class 2 handicap over a mile with any number in with a chance.  However, I just can’t get away from the current market leader in Afaak.  He’s trained by Charlie Hills who is decent nick & Jim Crowley is back on board.   After finishing 2nd to the top class Addeybb at the tail end of last season, he’s been out 4 times this term.  He needed his reappearance on soft ground at Newbury but then won the Hambleton here off a mark of 97. He was raised 6lbs for that & finished 2nd of 30 in the Royal Hunt Cup.   He only managed 4th last time out at Goodwood over a longer trip but had a nightmare passage, finishing off as good as any. As consistent as they come & a certain future Group performer, I fully expect him to justify favouritism at a track that suits him well.

Tips

PLACED – Back Afaak (e/w) for a 1.5/10 stake at 8.00 Skybet BOG (⅕ odds 1-6)

The big race is the Yorkshire Oaks and what a field.  Sea Of Class is the favourite but I think she’ll get turned over; it’s just a question of by who.  Laurens is a wonderful filly & she’ll surely go well but there’s a slight doubt over the trip & the ground.  You cannot discount Magic Wand, trained by Aiden O’Brien & ridden by Ryan Moore. She won the Ribblesdale but was under par in the Irish Oaks.

Betting

The one as an each way bet to nothing has to be the Gosden trained Coronet.  She was 3rd behind Poets Word & Crystal Ocean, and a distant 3rd at that, but didn’t get a clear run & wasn’t given a hard race thereafter.  Previous to that, she was 2nd in the Grand Prix de Saint Cloud & won the Group 2 Middleton at this track. 2nd in this race last year too, she likes the track.  Arguably she may prefer slightly easier ground but there’s a bit of rain around & she did win here on firmish ground. Yard is in top form too so I think in this 8 runner race where only 4 can be given a serious chance, she looks a worthy each way bet.

Tips

PLACED – Back Coronet (e/w) for a 2/10 stake at 7.00 Bet365 BOG (¼ odds 1-3)
