The last 16 of the French Open is due to conclude on what is a busy day of action at Roland Garros on Monday as the singles events head towards a conclusion. I say it is due to conclude but the forecast for Paris is awful so how much play we get remains to be seen.
Monday might be a day where Rafael Nadal is in action but there is no doubt as to what the showpiece occasion of the day is. It is the grudge match between Serena Williams which is on the main court. The surrounding cast is top quality too so if the rain stays away this should be a great day of tennis.
Day 8 Recap
It was largely a day for the favourites in the men’s draw on Sunday with Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem and Novak Djokovic progressing although once again Zverev had to go the distance in order to make it through. In the women’s draw Madison Keys, Sloane Stephens and Yulia Putintseva all cruised through too while the fourth match was unable to be completed before darkness fell.
We had a winner and a couple of losers on Sunday although Khachanov really should have beaten Zverev so that was annoying. In the one bet we’ve got outstanding Daria Kasatkina is a set up on Caroline Wozniacki so hopefully she can finish the job for us on Monday.
Philippe Chatrier Court
World number one Simona Halep is first up on Chatrier on Monday. She faces our remaining outright in the women’s draw in Elise Mertens before Daria Kasatkina and Caroline Wozniacki return to complete their match. Men’s world number one Rafael Nadal is then up when he takes on the German player Maximilian Marterer before the huge match of the day between Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova. The final match on the show court sees Marin Cilic taking on the flamboyant Italian, Fabio Fognini.
Suzanne Lenglen Court
Diego Schwartzman and Kevin Anderson open up in what could be a lengthy match on the second court on Monday before the former world number one Angelique Kerber takes on the one remaining French player in the singles draw in Caroline Garcia. It will be bombs away in the third match of the day as John Isner goes up against Juan Martin del Potro and then the final match of the day sees the former champion and number three seed Garbine Muguruza facing Lesia Tsurenko.

Men’s Betting
I like one bet over the course of the day in the men’s draw. It is on Diego Schwartzman who has already been good to me this week. He takes on Kevin Anderson who is so much improved it is untrue but clay may never be his thing and while he has done well to make it this far I think the end could be nigh for him here. Schwartzman continued to cruise through this draw when he saw off Borna Coric in straight sets. He hasn’t dropped a set in the tournament yet and while he might drop one in this match I still expect him to come through this one relatively unscathed.
Women’s Betting
In the women’s draw I’m going to take one too and that is the local hero Caroline Garcia who has played some nice tennis in this tournament and who looks to be in a position to take advantage of Angelique Kerber playing on her least effective service. To be fair to Kerber she has come through the draw without conceding a set so far but she goes up in class here. Garcia has had a decent clay court season to date and she can continue that by seeing off Kerber here.
