The third day of the German Masters is where the tournament really cranks up as the last 16 concludes and the quarter finals are also played out across a busy two sessions of action inside the Tempodrom in Berlin.
We’ve already seen the likes of Mark Williams, Judd Trump and Ding Junhui book their passages into the quarter finals and by the end of Friday we will know the identity of the four men who go through to one of the best weekends of the year which is the one-table format in this wonderful venue.
Afternoon Session
This is the session where the last 16 will draw to a close and on the TV table it will do so with Shaun Murphy taking on Mark Joyce who scored brilliantly in the first round on Thursday. Ryan Day will be looking to make another major quarter final when he plays Mark Davis while there is an all-Chinese clash between Liang Wenbo and Xiao Guodong, the man who dumped Mark Selby out in the first round. Graeme Dott faces Mei Xi Wen in the other match.
Evening Session
We already know two of the quarter finals in the evening session and we can say with some certainty that the clash between Ding Junhui and Judd Trump will grace the TV table. Mark Williams will face Jimmy Robertson in the other confirmed last eight clash. The other two matches will see Day or Davis facing Murphy or Joyce and the winner of the Chinese battle between Liang and Guodong will take on either Dott or Mei Xi Wen.

Betting
I’ll go with two bets over the course of the day with the first one being on Liang Wenbo to take out his countryman Xiao Guodong. Guodong took care of Mark Selby on the opening day but he was given a helping hand by Selby who was shockingly bad. I don’t expect Liang to be quite so nice in that regard. Although we saw Liang lose at The Masters he was hitting the ball well and he scored well in his first round match here. Guodong is a talent but Wenbo has a chance to go deep this week. I think he’ll take the first step with a win here.
The main table looks to be playing superbly and in the evening session two heavy scorers will be on it when Ding Junhui takes on Judd Trump. Both men have already made centuries on the table this week and I see no reason why they won’t combine for a couple more here. There won’t be a lot of safety played in this one and when the balls are open both are deadly in dishing them up. Even in a best of nine odds against on over 1.5 tons is attractive particularly given how lovely conditions appear to be.
