A cracking handicap over a mile with a big field of 20 runners.  One thing you cannot overlook in this race is the effect of the draw & I can’t be siding with anything coming out of a double figure stall.  Seniority & Escobar are the 2 at the head of the market, with the former yet to prove himself on turf whilst the latter has more solid claims but the price is a little skinny.

Main Bet

I’m going to take 2, both from good draws.  The main selection is Master The World, who won the race last year & was 2nd the year before.  He’s drawn 9 which is perfect given he likes to be held up so any lower could present traffic problems.  Last year’s victory came off a mark of 103 & he’s 3lb higher today but, whilst his recent form hasn’t been great, there’s plenty to suggest he’ll be returning to top form today.  Obviously he loves the track & he has the assistance of Crowley in the saddle. His yard is in decent nick having saddled Sir Dancealot to win here early in the week. Since the run 12 months ago, he’s been 1st & 2nd in Listed races on the all weather last season & this, he’s won the Winter Derby (awarded in the stewards room) & been 2nd on All Weather Championships day.  His 3 runs since haven’t been as good but that’s seen him priced up at generous odds. With a return to his favourite turf track & with conditions in his favour, I expect a big run.

Outsider

The 2nd selection is far more speculative but I just cannot leave him out of calculations.  Poets Society ran here on Wednesday & finished 10th having made the running.  He was drawn wider in 10 that day, used up plenty of energy to get to the front & went off too fast, fading a furlong out but was still only 4 lengths back.   Dettori replaces a 7lb claimer & with a lack of pace low, he can break from stall 7 & hopefully dictate the tempo. If he can do that, he should go well & will certainly avoid the scrimmaging in behind.  He takes his racing very well with his last 2 wins coming just 24 hours after their previous run. That’s a good sign & the fact he’s won here too is another plus. The key to this horse is being able to make all & I think the draw of other front runners make this very likely.  He looks overpriced.

Tips

Back Master The World (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 13.00 Bet365 BOG (¼ odds 1-5)

PLACED – Back Poets Society (e/w) for a 0.5/10 stake at 21.00 Skybet BOG (⅕ odds 1-6)

3.35 Goodwood: King George Qatar Stakes

Preview

This race seems to revolve around the top class Battash but odds on is no price.  He should be better than the rest but I’m prepared to take him on. He can boil over before his races & will face a battle for the lead too so I’ll go each way on one at longer odds in the hope this is an off day.

Betting

Sioux Nation looks the most likely to profit should the favourite fail to deliver.  He’s the next highest rated in the field, is still a 3 year old & looks to have improvement left in him.   He also comes from the top Irish yard of O’Brien & is the mount of Ryan Moore. He’s a horse that has been mainly campaigned at 6 furlongs despite winning the 5 furlong Norfolk Stakes as a 2 year old last year.   Everyone connected with the horse says his main asset is speed &, as the trainer states, he’ll like the drop back to the minimum trip. He won the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes last year & won a Group 3 at Naas earlier this year.   Ascot did not go well for him when a well backed favourite; he was slowly away & never really recovered. Last time out, he was much better when 5th in the July Cup & that looked more like it. Whilst he was over 2 lengths back, his jockey overdid the waiting tactics & the stiff finish at Newmarket didn’t play to his speedy strength.   I think with a fast pace guaranteed, back over the minimum trip & at a course that should suit, he’s the one most likely if Battash fails to shine.

Tips

Back Sioux Nation (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 9.00 Ladbrokes BOG (⅕ odds 1-3)
