2018 Mzansi Super League – Cape Town Blitz vs Tshwane Spartans Betting Preview

The Mzansi Super League gets underway on Friday evening and it does so with the biggest player in the tournament on show as the Cape Town Blitz take on the Tshwane Spartans in the inaugural match of South Africa’s new T20 league.

Both sides will be looking to make fast starts to their campaigns knowing that they only have 10 matches to make enough of an impact to make it into the top three to have a shot at winning the tournament.

Cape Town Blitz

When everyone is available to them the Cape Town Blitz look like a side who could trouble anyone in this competition with a solid, if maybe a little unspectacular, batting line up and a bowling attack with the right variety and sufficient quality to expose any team in the tournament. In many ways given that they have players missing this is a free shot for the Blitz.

I guess given that they are not at full strength for this match it would be advantageous for them if they were away from home for this game but that is not the card that has been dealt to them. They are going to need one of their domestic batsmen to stand up and be counted if they are to have any chance you would think.

Tshwane Spartans

Just like their opponents in this match the Tshwane Spartans will be missing a few players as well. They look a nicely balanced side and if they can carry the spirits of the Titans franchise through with them then you would think they are entitled to be tough to beat in this competition. A lot of their success or otherwise will be determined by how they bowl at SuperSport Park later in the tournament.

A look down their squad list tells us that the Spartans do not lack for firepower with the bat and they have enough with the ball to be more than competitive here. If AB de Villiers lights up this competition they will soon become one of the favourites to steamroll their way through this tournament like the side who played here in leagues gone by have done.

Team News

Cape Town Blitz will be without their captain Farhaan Behardien and influential batsman Quinton de Kock as they are away with South Africa. Andile Phehlukwayo and Dale Steyn are also away as well. Dawid Malan is set to feature.

Tshwane Spartans have their captain AB de Villiers available but they will be without the spearhead of their attack in Lundi Ngidi while Sean Williams is having visa troubles so Rilee Rossouw is set to come in for him.

Betting

With the Tshwane Spartans such heavy favourites and many markets skewed in their favour this isn’t the easiest match to bet on given that we are still adjusting to the new squads and the new competition but there is one market where I think the Spartans are priced right, if with a little bit of value.

That is the most sixes market where I think Tshwane should be good things. If Rossouw or de Villiers get going they could post the sort of number that is not gettable. It could be the sort of number that Cape Town wouldn’t reach even with their international batsmen but without them it may definitely be the case. Rory Kleinveldt is another big hitter in this Spartans side and I expect them to deliver the most sixes.
