The inaugural Mzansi Super League draws to a close on Sunday afternoon when the Cape Town Blitz take on the Jozi Stars in the final of the tournament in Durban to find out who the first ever champions will be.
The Blitz made it through to this final courtesy of finishing in top spot in the table while Jozi Stars were beneficiaries of a washout in the eliminator which meant they made it here courtesy of coming second in the regular season.
Cape Town Blitz
The Cape Town Blitz lived up to their name in the early part of the season, blitzing all before them and seemingly running away with the title but they slowed down in the second half of the campaign, not necessarily on results but certainly in the level of their standout performances, which did dip, albeit understandably given their position in the standings.
Quinton de Kock has been their lynchpin with the bat in this competition but there is an ever so slight concern about what they will offer with the willow should he fail to make a score. In fairness he hasn’t failed too often thus far. The Blitz bowling attack knows it needs to deliver against a Stars batting line up which is just starting to come to the party.
Jozi Stars
It took a while for the Jozi Stars to get going in this tournament but go they have got and their last performance was one of the standout displays of the season by a distance. All of a sudden they have four or five batsmen looking in good touch and you get the feeling they are ready to embrace this final with the bat which is never a bad thing.
Ultimately, finals tend to be won with the ball and the Stars aren’t too far behind in that department either with the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Simon Harmer and Beuran Hendricks in their ranks. They will know Quinton de Kock is a key wicket and will look to dismiss him accordingly. If the Stars have saved their best for last they could upset the odds here.
Team News
Dale Steyn and Quinton de Kock have been the leading players for the Blitz this season and both will play here. Ashwell Prince will need to make a decision on whether to play Dane Piedt or the extra batsman in Kyle Verreynne.
It doesn’t happen too often but the Jozi Stars have actually been better off without Chris Gayle on this tournament so they might be quite pleased he is not around for this match. Rassie van der Dussen is in great form heading into this final.

Betting
I like the way the Jozi Stars have got better the longer this season has gone on and I think they have more players in the sort of form to win this match than the Cape Town Blitz have. I think de Kock and Steyn are going to have to have huge matches for Cape Town if they are going to get over the line here and that is pressure, something we have to acknowledge that South Africans don’t always cope too well with.
You look down the Jozi Stars batting line up and four or five of them are in excellent form and with three international bowlers in their ranks they should be able to handle the pressure with the ball. Quinton de Kock is a key wicket but if they get that early enough they should have what it takes to come out on top here.
