2018 Newmarket July Festival – Friday 13th July Betting Preview

The July Festival continues at Newmarket on Friday and after a winner and a place from the two races we got involved in on Thursday we are back with bets on two more races on what is a decent looking card.

2.25 Newmarket: Duchess of Cambridge Stakes

Preview

A Group 2 sprint for 2 year olds which seems like a rerun of 2 Royal Ascot races, the 6 furlong Albany & the 5 furlong Queen Mary.  Coming here from the Albany is the winner Main Edition, the 2nd La Pelosa, 4th Angel’s Hideaway and horses that 5th & 7th. The first 3 in that list occupy 3 of the front 4 positions in the betting but I’m not totally convinced by any of them.  Ascot is a stiff track & it’s interesting that the trainers of the front 2 said a step up to 7 furlongs would suit.

Betting

That leads me to favouring the 5 furlong form of the Queen Mary in this smaller field & on this easier track.   Therefore, the bet has to be Gossamer Wings who ran a cracker when a short head 2nd at Royal Ascot at odds of 25/1.  The form looks rock solid with the 4th having won a Group 3 next time out & the 8th, 10th & 11th having filled the first 3 places in a French Group 3 since.  Previous to that run, the selection won a maiden at Naas & finished 3rd to Just Wonderful. Breeding suggests she’ll be suited by the step up in trip & I think she’ll have too much speed for her rivals.  Her yard has won the last 2 runnings of this with fillies that had been beaten at Ascot, one of them in the Queen Mary. Whilst she’s not the biggest price in the world, I think there’s a lack of serious contenders here & she looks an each way bet to nothing.

Tips

Back Gossamer Wings (e/w) for a 2/10 stake at 6.00 Bet365 BOG (¼ odds 1-3)

3.00 Newmarket: Bet365 Handicap

Preview

A 10 furlong handicap but a disappointing field of just 9 turning up. Wissahickon is the favourite having won his last 2 but is up 7lbs when winning a race run to suit last time out.  The 2nd, Beringer, another suited by the way the race panned out, reopposes whilst 2nd favourite is Zaaki who steps back from Group company but doesn’t look particularly well handicapped.

Betting

I am taking a chance of 2 long priced selections, both from the same top Northern yard, who finished 1st & 2nd in the London Gold Cup.   The 2 in question are Communique & Poets Prince, and both have very similar credentials.  The first thing to say is that they finished last & last but one in that Wissahickon/Beringer race but they took each other on up front & never really looked like winning.  Interestingly though, neither of today’s top jockeys were on board but both were on top for the London Gold Cup when 1st & 2nd. The 3rd race that day was Chief Ironside who is 5lbs worse off with Poets Prince & reopposes Communique on the same terms.

The yard are suggesting this has been the target since that Newbury race, the jockey bookings certainly suggest as much.  The ground will suit both & hailing from a yard that’s won 4 of the last 6 runnings, I think it’s worth backing both at double figure prices.
