2018 Scottish Open Snooker – Semi-Finals Betting Preview

We are down to the one table in the Scottish Open from Saturday onwards with both semi-finals being played on what should be a tasty day of snooker inside the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, as the third Home Nations event of the season draws towards a conclusion.

Three of the four ranking event winners heading into the quarter finals made it through to set up a really juicy semi-final with the other one being full of intrigue as well. We’re up to the best-of-11 now and should be in for a great day of action.

Afternoon Session

Mark Allen vs Daniel Wells

It is experience against inexperience as far as semi-finals in big events are concerned as The Masters champion and recent UK Championship finalist Mark Allen takes on the Welsh player Daniel Wells who will be competing in his first semi-final at this level.

Allen has come through the draw relatively nicely this week without really ever being tested but I’ve just started to sense that he might be coming towards the point where the petrol tank is beginning to run on fumes rather than fuel. Wells was given a right touch when Ronnie O’Sullivan pulled out against him in the first round and he has taken full advantage of that. Quite what he has left here remains to be seen.

There is just enough in the price to take Wells on the +3.5 leg handicap here. I really do think Allen is beginning to teeter on the edge of an indifferent performance but to be fair Wells is playing well enough to win anyway. It is hard to trust the Welshman to win his first semi-final but I do think he can reach three frames.

Evening Session

Shaun Murphy vs Judd Trump

The second semi-final promises to be an absolute cracker as our pre-tournament pick Shaun Murphy looks to secure the place part of the outright pay out when he goes up against a Judd Trump looking for successive Home Nations titles.

Both these men are no stranger to being at this stage of a tournament and neither of them like to lose when they are here. I’m expecting to see the best of both men and something of a titanic tussle to ensure between two of the most watchable stars in the present game. I’m not going to bet on the match itself as I’m effectively on Murphy at 25/1 via that outright punt but one bet does stand out.

Over 1.5 centuries at the time of writing is somehow being priced up at even money and that is all wrong. Just in the last round Trump made three tons and Murphy ended with one. When these two met in The Masters quarter final at the beginning of the year over this distance Trump concluded with two tons. Both these guys are capable of covering this line on their own but one ton apiece will do nicely. Even money looks huge.
