2018 Shanghai Masters Snooker – Day 2 Betting Preview

The second day of action at the Shanghai Masters sees the first round end and the first set of matches in the second round take place on what looks like a really good schedule in the Chinese city.

With the elite and the good on show in this tournament the schedule was always going to be good but the card on Tuesday looks particularly appealing so everything is set for a great day on the green baize.

Early Morning Session

The first round concludes on Tuesday when Ryan Day begins his campaign against the Chinese amateur Chang Bingyu who will probably find the going a little tough at this level. The other match in this session looks a pearler as Anthony McGill goes up against Yan Bingtao in a proper contest to determine who will face Mark Williams on Wednesday.

Morning Session

The former world champion Mark Selby is probably the headline attraction in the second session of the morning. He was due to be facing Luca Brecel in the opening match of the second round but Zhou Yuelong never read that script and it is he who will take on the world number one instead. Barry Hawkins goes up against Stephen Maguire in the other game of what looks like a decent little session.

Afternoon Session

It is the final session of the day which is well worth waiting for however. Ding Junhui will be the centre of attention when he begins his quest for another title when he takes on The Masters champion Mark Allen in a real tasty clash. On the other table two standout stars collide when Judd Trump goes up against Kyren Wilson in one of the better matches of the second round of the tournament.

Betting

The tournament has a feel of really beginning with this set of matches and I’m going to go with three over the course of the day. The first comes in the second session when Barry Hawkins and Stephen Maguire look like playing out a close match. Matches between the two are generally tight and with Maguire having had a match on the tables this week and Hawkins arriving here in good touch I’m expecting this one to have a fair bit of mileage in it. Maguire had to come from behind on Monday but when he found his fluency he scored pretty well. Hawkins usually gets himself up for these sorts of events so the 6/5 on over 9.5 frames appeals.

I like the same bet in the Ding Junhui and Mark Allen contest. Allen looked very good in touch on Monday and seems to relish playing the bigger players while Ding looked pretty good in the Six Reds last week and suggested the off table issues such as the birth of his child which clearly had his attention in the World Open, is behind him. Both these two are top class so if they both play well at the same time we should get a special match but however they play I think we’ll go beyond 9.5 frames.

Kyren Wilson has started this season on fire and his form dictates that he shouldn’t be odds against in many matches, if any, outside of taking on Ronnie O’Sullivan, Mark Williams and Mark Selby. He is odds against for his match against Judd Trump though and while Trump has freshness on his side that is countered by the fact Wilson will be used to the conditions having seen off Liang Wenbo on Monday and he must be seeing the pockets like caves with the amount of matches he has been winning. There is no substitute for confidence in sport and Wilson has it. He also has four wins from the last five competitive meetings with Trump. At this price he’s the obvious bet.
