We have entered the final month of the County Championship season and there is still so much to be decided across the two divisions with just four rounds of matches to go. The first of those get underway on Tuesday and each one begins to carry more and more importance.
The two titles are still up for grabs and as well as that we have one of the most fascinating battles to avoid the drop of all time. All of that could become a little clearer this week in what feels like a pivotal set of fixtures.
Division One
The defending champions host the champions in waiting this week as Essex take on Surrey at Chelmsford but the big game of the week could well come from Worcester where the bottom placed Worcestershire take on Hampshire who are eight points above them in sixth spot and occupying the final safe spot. Yorkshire are in the relegation zone so their match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge is pretty huge while Somerset will look to keep up the chase of Surrey when they host a Lancashire side who are anything but out of trouble themselves.
Division Two
Warwickshire know that if they win their final four matches they will be crowned champions and the first of those comes against a stumbling Durham side. Kent are in second place and they host a Northamptonshire side whose season is as good as over. Sussex have moved up to third and right into the promotion mix and can enhance their hopes when they host Leicestershire at Hove. Middlesex need wins badly have head to Bristol to face Gloucestershire while Derbyshire take on rank bottom Glamorgan at Derby.

Betting
Two sides who are out of form meet at Trent Bridge but I’m not convinced Nottinghamshire will be out of nick for much longer. They have taken some brutal beatings in recent weeks with their batting particularly struggling but the signing of Ben Duckett and the inclusion of Kraigg Braithwaite should help with their difficulties.
Yorkshire are without Kane Williamson from here on in while Andrew Hodd, top scorer last week, is missing too. Ben Coad remains out injured and this really does look like a threadbare side for Yorkshire who aren’t performing much better than Nottinghamshire. I’ve thought Yorkshire would be relegated all season and I still think that. Nottinghamshire can put another nail in their coffin.
