After the thrills and spills of the Vitality Blast quarter finals the latest round of Specsavers County Championship matches are upon us. The business part of the season has arrived with the two titles as well as promotion and relegation battles hotting up so we’re in for a decent week of matches.
As ever for this competition we have to wait until the end of the season for the TV coverage so we are reduced to the live streams that counties offer, the radio commentaries and the various live blogs and social media updates.
Division One
The leaders Surrey will be looking to extend their lead at the top of the table when they host third placed Nottinghamshire who could still be reeling from their T20 quarter final defeat. Somerset will be on a high having beaten them and they make the trip to Leeds to face a fading Yorkshire side. Two sides threatened with relegation meet at Southport when Lancashire go up against Worcestershire in a dress rehearsal for the T20 semi-final next month while the other match sees Hampshire travelling to the defending champions Essex.
Division Two
It is tight at the top of Division Two heading into this round of matches. The leaders Warwickshire hold a four point advantage at the top which they will look to maintain when they head to Colwyn Bay to face the bottom side Glamorgan. Sussex will look to keep up the chase but they have a tough assignment away to Middlesex at Lord’s. Kent in third look to have the chance to take advantage of any slip ups when they head to Derbyshire with the other two matches seeing Leicestershire heading to Bristol to take on Gloucestershire and Durham hosting Northamptonshire.

Betting
I’ll take a couple of away sides this week with Somerset taken to beat Yorkshire. It was an interesting move for Yorkshire to announce that Jack Brooks is joining Somerset at the end of the season before this match and one wonders whether he will play and just how motivated he’ll be to beat his next county if he does. Somerset should be on a real high after their quarter final win on Monday and they are going very well in the Championship too. I feared for Yorkshire at the beginning of the season and I still do so Somerset are the pick here.
Given all that they have invested into their Vitality Blast campaign you have to think that having lost the quarter final of it Gloucestershire could be in a bit of a hole when they entertain Leicestershire this week. Leicestershire have played their best cricket in the four day arena this season and with their bowling attack it is no surprise that has been the case. I think they have the better balance with bat and ball here and they should be in a much better mental and physical state heading in too. I expect that to equate to an away win here.
