2018 US Open Tennis – Day 2 Betting Preview

The first round of the two singles draws is set to conclude on what is expected to be another hot and humid day at the US Open on Tuesday. The sizzling New York conditions are set to make it a brutal day at Flushing Meadows as the bottom half of both draws open their campaigns.

That means that on the card on Tuesday we have star attractions such as Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Alexander Zverev, Caroline Wozniacki and Angelique Kerber taking to the courts on what should be a wonderful day of tennis.

Day 1 Recap

It didn’t take long for the first big shock of the tournament to arrive. It came in the opening match as the French Open champion and world number one Simona Halep was sent packing. It wasn’t a great day for the Brits either with Heather Watson and Kyle Edmund both bombing out but there were wins for Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Juan Martin del Potro and both Williams sisters among others.

It was a decent enough day for us betting wise which could have been even better. The games totals comfortably came in for us with both Kevin Anderson and Venus Williams being taken to deciding sets before coming through. Unfortunately Mischa Zverev lost from two sets up while the other two bets lost. We did ensure a profit on the day though when the first accumulator of the week came in.

Arthur Ashe Stadium

Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki is the first star name up on the main court on Tuesday. She faces the former winner of this tournament in Sam Stosur in what looks like a competitive start for both women. Novak Djokovic will begin his quest for back-to-back slams after that when he goes up against Marton Fucsovics in the other match in the day session.

Roger Federer predictably gets the evening session underway when he is on court to take on the Japanese player Yoshihito Nishioka before the beaten finalist in the women’s event last year Madison Keys takes centre stage. She goes up against Pauline Parmentier of France for a place in the second round.

Louis Armstrong Stadium

The former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko is first up on the second court on Tuesday. She faces the competent Andrea Petkovic in a great looking game. They are followed by the Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber who begins her quest for this title against Margarita Gasparyan. The day session is then rounded off with Alexander Zverev facing the Lucky Loser, Peter Polansky.

Nick Kyrgios will look to entertain the crowds when he gets the evening session underway on this court on Tuesday. He takes on Radu Albot before Maria Sharapova is back under the New York lights when she faces the veteran Patty Schneider who managed to come through qualifying to take her place in the main draw.

Grandstand

There is another decent day lined up out on Grandstand with the exciting Naomi Osaka opening up the action. She faces the German player Laura Siegemund before the former champion Marin Cilic takes to the court. He is up against Marius Copil and then comes the big test for the British number one Jo Konta. She faces up to the sixth seed Caroline Garcia in a humdinger of a draw for both women. The action on this court is rounded off when Frances Tiafoe goes up against Adrian Mannarino under the lights.

Court 17

There was some great action out on Court 17 on Monday and plenty more of the same is expected on Tuesday. Petra Kvitova leads the action off when she takes on the dangerous Yanina Wickmayer before Kirsten Flipkens meets the out of form Coco Vandeweghe. Fabio Fognini is always entertaining and he is third on court when he plays Michael Mmoh of America before the final match of the day sees Maximilian Marterer going up against Kei Nishikori.

Best of the Rest

As ever at this time of the tournament there are plenty of good players out on the other courts with the likes of Richard Gasquet and Kiki Bertens out on Court 5 with Gael Monfils also on that court. Hyeon Chung, Diego Schwartzman and Daria Kasatkina make for an entertaining trio out on Court 10 while Court 4 sees Pablo Carreno Busta and Lucas Pouille in action.

Dominika Cibulkova, David Goffin, Belinda Bencic, Eugenie Bouchard and Kiki Mladenovic are among the big names who will be looking to make it into the second round without too many scares on the minor courts of Flushing Meadows.

Men’s Betting

There are two bets that get my attention in the men’s draw on Tuesday. Marin Cilic and Marius Copil played at Cincinnati earlier in the month in a match which went the distance in three tight sets and I fancy we might see more than 32.5 games in this one as well. One close set should see this line covered because both have decent serves so breaks are going to be at a premium. Two close sets certainly gets this covered. We don’t even need the Romanian to win a set here. He’s shown in both their previous meetings that he can do that though. The games line looks a trifle low to me here.

Filip Krajinovic is coming back from injury and to be fair he hasn’t hit the ground running on his comeback and I think he is there to be beaten by Matthew Ebden. The Australian might not be the best player going around but in tough conditions he isn’t likely to be found wanting and he has actually got a fair bit of winning momentum under his belt after a pretty decent summer. If the Serb was fully fit and playing regularly this might be a no bet but he isn’t so I’m on the Aussie in this one.

Women’s Betting

Kirsten Flipkens is almost begging to be backed against a Coco Vandeweghe who pulled out of New Haven in the third set of her opening match last week and who hasn’t won a match in her last four tournaments. Of course it is perfectly possible that the American will be inspired by the bright lights and the razzmatazz of New York but she will certainly need to be. We’ve seen some solid performances out of Flipkens in the past and if Vandeweghe makes a ton of errors the Belgian won’t need a second invitation to come through here. Flipkens is almost a no brainer bet here given the current form of the American.

It looks as though Mihaela Buzarnescu has recovered from her Montreal mishap to play here which is good both for my outright punt and her chances in this match where I’m just going to have to back her again. Her opponent Marketa Vondrousova is talented but has offered little form and she’s only odds on to win this match because it looked like the Romanian was done for the season a couple of weeks ago. I don’t see Buzarnescu playing here if she wasn’t confident of getting through the match unscathed so I’ll take a small stake on her to win which I’m confident she’ll do if she’s anywhere close to 100%.

Daily Accumulator

We hit the jackpot with our opening accumulator of the tournament so we go into Tuesday’s one armed with a pot sitting at a profit of £41.19 for our opening £10 stake. Same rules as Monday. One accumulator with no real reasoning.

Robin Haase win

Aryna Sabalenka win

Daria Kasatkina win

Benoit Paire win

Frances Tiafoe win

£10 pays £70.40
