2018 US Open Tennis – Day 5 Betting Preview

The third round of the US Open gets underway in New York on Friday as a really top class schedule is played out across Flushing Meadows. This is the first round of the tournament where seeded players can clash and we have plenty of juicy matches to look forward to.

The pick of them is the one between the two Williams sisters which headlines the night session but there are many other great matches in store for us with the likes of Rafael Nadal, Juan Martin del Potro, Kevin Anderson, Elina Svitolina and Karolina Pliskova all taking to the courts.

Day 4 Recap

The drama kept on coming on Thursday with a number of close matches around the grounds but Roger Federer was not someone who was kept waiting. He breezed through in straight sets while Novak Djokovic was taken to four sets before coming through. There were a couple of surprises with Pablo Carreno Busta and Fabio Fognini losing while on the women’s side there was a seismic shock as Caroline Wozniacki was knocked out.

It was another frustrating day for us betting wise with the accumulator losing when Carreno Busta retired in the final set while Monica Puig failed to get over the line in a deciding set. In the end it was two winners, two losers and a void from the singles bets on the day but it is fair to say we’re due some luck especially in final sets!

Arthur Ashe Stadium

The defending champion Sloane Stephens gets the action underway on the main show court. She goes up against fellow Grand Slam winner Victoria Azarenka in what looks a pearler of a clash to start with. The day session comes to a close when Rafael Nadal takes on the dangerous challenge of Karen Khachanov for a place in the last 16.

The night session is going to be special. It gets underway with the hugely anticipated clash between Serena Williams and her sister Venus who meet in a Grand Slam once again. The second match of the evening also looks full of class when Juan Martin del Potro faces Andy Murray’s conqueror Fernando Verdasco.

Louis Armstrong Stadium

There is a decent schedule on the secondary court as well on Friday with Barbora Strycova and Elise Mertens opening up the day session. Elina Svitolina is then back on the court as he looks to continue to go under the radar when she takes on Qiang Wang. The day session looks to be rounded off in style when Kevin Anderson takes on the exciting Denis Shapovalov.

It is the men who get the evening session going on Armstrong when Milos Raonic takes on the former winner Stan Wawrinka who is looking to continue his amazing unbeaten run at Flushing Meadows. Karolina Pliskova meets Sofia Kenin to conclude what looks like being a belting day.

Grandstand

You won’t be disappointed if you have a grounds pass on Friday and plonk yourself on the Grandstand or just crack open a bottle of something and watch the stream of this court. Play begins with Ekaterina Makarova going up against Anastasija Sevastova before Dominic Thiem looks to progress to the second week when he goes up against Taylor Fritz. John Isner then meets Dusan Lajovic before the action concludes with Ash Barty facing Karolina Muchova.

Court 17

The remaining three singles matches take place on Court 17 and after a doubles match opens up play it will be Nikoloz Basilashvili facing Guido Pella before Kaia Kanepi goes up against Rebecca Peterson. The last game on the court is probably worthy of a bigger stage as Borna Coric faces Daniil Medvedev in what is sure to be a competitive encounter.

Men’s Betting

I’ll go with three bets in the men’s draw on Friday and they are all taking the games overs on what looks like low looking lines. The weather is set to be cooler on Friday with a bit of rain around so the courts are going to be slower which should in turn take on the pep on big serves and make for close matches.

With that in mind I think the lines in the John Isner against Dusan Lajovic, Borna Coric and Daniil Medvedev and Juan Martin del Potro and Fernando Verdasco matches are all low. The last four meetings between Isner and Lajovic have gone to a final set tiebreak while Coric and Medvedev are both creaming the ball and hitting it very well. Verdasco played one of his best matches in quite some time against Andy Murray and should be competitive against Juan Martin del Potro. I don’t see any of those matches being won in straight sets and the games lines are low enough that should they go to four sets the lines will be covered.

Women’s Betting

There is one bet I like in the women’s draw on Friday too and we have to wait right until the final match on the Armstrong court where I think Sofia Kenin can push Karolina Pliskova close. Pliskova doesn’t have the record that someone with her serving ability should have in this tournament and the slower conditions probably are not going to help her any with her movement often exposed.

Kenin should be inspired by the crowd under the lights on Armstrong and the younger woman will be moving much better than Pliskova around the court. She might not have enough to win although I wouldn’t rule it out but I would be surprised if this doesn’t go three sets and with that in mind Kenin should be able to remain within 4.5 games.

Daily Accumulator

We fell by one with the daily accumulator on Thursday which means we are 2-2 for the week and our profit is reduced to £81.59 for £10 stakes. We’ll go again on Friday with another bunch of favourites who look good.
