2018 US Open Tennis – Day 6 Betting Preview

The third round of both singles draws in the US Open draw to a close on Saturday in what promises to be another wonderful day of tennis across the Flushing Meadows complex out in New York as the final major of the year continues at a good pace.

We are back to the bottom half of the draw once again which means that we will have the pleasure of watching Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Marin Cilic, Alexander Zverev, Madison Keys, Maria Sharapova and Petra Kvitova among others all in action.

Day 5 Recap

Friday was one of those truly special days at the US Open which will be remembered for the classic contest between Rafael Nadal and Karen Khachanov which the Spaniard won in four brilliant sets. There were a number of close matches on the day but shocks were few and far between as the big names all made it into the next round.

It was another up and down day for us betting wise with two singles winning in the form of the Isner and Lajovic overs and Kenin handicap. Annoyingly the accumulator went down by one leg once again so there is a little bit for us to do across Saturday’s matches.

Arthur Ashe Stadium

The day session on Ashe looks to be of a real top quality with the beaten 2017 finalist Madison Keys getting things underway. She faces Aleksandra Krunic for a place in the fourth round of the tournament. That is the starter to what is a mouth-watering main course when Nick Kyrgios goes up against Roger Federer in the pick of the matches to round off the first session of play.

The women get things going in the night session on Ashe on Saturday night with Maria Sharapova looking to protect her unbeaten record under the New York lights when she plays former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko. Novak Djokovic is then given the task of closing out the day when he faces Richard Gasquet for a last 16 spot.

Louis Armstrong Stadium

If you don’t get the chance to watch the action on Ashe then you get well compensated on the Armstrong court on Saturday as Kiki Bertens looks to continue her good recent run when she takes on Marketa Vondrousova before a really tasty clash between Dominika Cibulkova and Angelique Kerber. It is an all-German battle that concludes the day session when Philipp Kohlschreiber takes on Alex Zverev.

Petra Kvitova goes up against Aryna Sabalenka in what looks like a good match to open up the night session on Armstrong. Former winner Marin Cilic closes off the day when he looks to continue his good start to the tournament. He faces the next gen star Alex de Minaur who looks in pretty decent touch himself.

Grandstand

Two unseeded players start off play on Saturday afternoon over on the Grandstand as John Millman takes on Mikhail Kukushkin in a match which presents a real chance for both men to make the second week. Two more unseeded players follow them as Katerina Siniakova goes up against Lesia Tsurenko before Naomi Osaka meets the dangerous Aliaksandra Sasnovich. The men round off the action on Grandstand when what promises to be a really entertaining battle between Diego Schwartzman and Kei Nishikori takes place.

Court 17

It is a doubles contest that gets things up and running out on Court 17 and then singles play all the way after that. The opening singles match sees Caroline Garcia going up against Carla Suarez Navarro before two entertainers take to the court as Lucas Pouille meets Joao Sousa before the final match of the day sees Jan-Lennard Struff going up against the extremely competent David Goffin.

Men’s Betting

I’ll go with three bets in the men’s draw on Saturday with over 40.5 games being the first pick in the main match of the day when Nick Kyrgios takes on Roger Federer. Only one of the nine sets they have played against each other has not gone to a tiebreak so as long as there are four sets in this match then the over will comfortably cover here. I don’t expect Kyrgios to beat Federer but he has the stage to perform on here and he should be competitive for a fair while until Federer eventually breaks his resistance. They’ve gone to a deciding set each time they have played thus far so I like over 40.5 games here.

Joao Sousa looks overpriced to see off Lucas Pouille to me. I say that because Pouille hasn’t convinced me in this tournament and but for a couple of brain fades Marcos Baghdatis could easily have beaten him in the previous round. Sousa is going to bring an aggressive game to the Frenchman and not allow Pouille to get on the front foot and I just wonder how long the seeded player will take that for. When the going gets tough Pouille usually gets going so there’s definite value in Sousa to claim a second seeded scalp in as many matches.

The entertaining match of the day should be the one between Kei Nishikori and Diego Schwartzman and we might be tired just watching these two energetic men going about their business. Their two meetings so far have been on the clay but both went to a deciding set and with the Argentine more comfortable on the harder courts where his ground strokes have more effect I think we’re in for another tasty and lengthy tussle between these two. The games line looks staggeringly low at 36.5 to me so I’ll go with the over.

Women’s Betting

On a competitive day of women’s action there is just the one I like on Saturday and we have to wait until the night session for it as Aryna Sabalenka takes on Petra Kvitova. To be fair to Kvitova she has looked very good in this tournament thus far but she is likely to be in a battle here and I never truly favour the Czech in that situation. Sabalenka is in great form and her confidence will be sky high so I’m expecting her to get on the front foot and get after her opponent here. At odds against she looks like the call in that one.

Daily Accumulator

Yet again one leg let us down in the daily accumulator on Friday which means we are 2-3 for the week with a profit of £71.59 for a £10 stake. We’ll go again on Saturday with a mixture of favourites, an outsider and a total games thrown in for good measure.
