2018 Vitality Blast – Friday 17th August Matches Betting Preview

It is the final night of group stage action in the Vitality Blast on Friday evening with plenty still at stake in the race for quarter final places. By the end of the evening we will know the eight sides who will be fighting it out for spots at Finals Day next month.

As ever we have a TV match which is a huge game in the North Group while many of the other games over the course of the night will have live streams, radio commentaries and social media updates so we can stay on top of the action.

North Group

The big match in this group is the one between Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire. It is quarter final week next week so this is effectively a last 16 match as the winners will progress and the losers will be done for the season. That is why the TV cameras are at Headingley for this one. The other big match in the group sees Birmingham Bears hosting Worcestershire. If the TV game is a tie or a washout Birmingham will go through with a win. Worcestershire will host a quarter final if they win. Durham will top the group if they can see off Derbyshire at the Riverside while the other match sees the bottom two in the group doing battle when Leicestershire host Northamptonshire.

South Group

All eyes will be on Hove on Friday evening to see if Sussex can pick up the win they need to book the final quarter final spot. They will get it if they see off Middlesex but were they to lose then they winners of the match between Glamorgan and Surrey are Cardiff will snatch that last spot off them. Kent will be at home in the quarter final if they win at Essex but should they slip up then Gloucestershire will have the chance of being at home in the last eight if they can win at the Ageas Bowl when they face Hampshire.

TV Match Betting

I’m expecting a high scoring match in the TV game at Headingley as two powerful batting line ups go at it on a pitch that is fast becoming one of the best one day wickets in the country. Both sides are stacked with power in their top order and they both have a couple of players down the order who give it some humpty so I am expecting the runs to flow here. Neither side have much mystery in their bowling attack so I’m expecting the batsman to start lining big shots up and getting a host of boundaries away.

Steven Mullaney has gone up the order a few times this season and in what is a knockout match for the defending champions I wouldn’t be surprised if his experience is utilised early to assist what is a youngish top order after the openers. Mullaney was in the North side in that competition in the Caribbean earlier in the year so he is well thought of and for good reason. 9/1 quotes on him being the top Nottinghamshire batsman look a trifle high to me.

Other Matches

Worcestershire have already qualified for the knockout stages but I fancy they can come roaring back after their defeat to Nottinghamshire last time out. Moeen Ali has been released from the England squad to feature which is massive. We saw the pitch at Edgbaston look sluggish on Wednesday evening and the Rapids have plenty of medium pacers to take advantage of that. Birmingham are realistically playing with a chip and a chair and I wouldn’t be completely surprised if they struggle to get going in this one. Worcestershire will secure a home quarter final with a win here which should be all the incentive they need to deliver a strong performance.

Glamorgan produced an amazing run chase to see off Surrey at The Oval earlier in the competition and with Surrey having no Jason Roy for this match and the whereabouts of Sam Curran up in the air I fancy the Welsh side can finish the competition with a win. They were well beaten at Sussex the other night but they are a lot better than that, as we saw in that win at The Oval. At odds against I’ll take the home side to finally end Surrey’s campaign even if it isn’t enough to qualify themselves.
