2018 Wimbledon Tennis Ladies Final – Angelique Kerber vs Serena Williams Betting Preview

One the epic second men’s semi-final has finished on Centre Court at Wimbledon it will be the turn of the ladies final to take place and everything is set up for a wonderful conclusion to the women’s event as Angelique Kerber takes on Serena Williams for the third Grand Slam title of the year.

These two met in the 2016 Wimbledon final which Serena won in straight sets but the landscape is a little different ahead of this confrontation which is what makes it intriguing in the lead up to the match and hopefully interesting throughout it.

Angelique Kerber

You would have to say that from a very early stage in this tournament Angelique Kerber has looked like the finalist in it. I’m not saying that because I backed her before the tournament begun but she has handled some really competent opponents and blown them away in ruthless fashion, something she wasn’t previously doing.

Kerber in many ways is the female Rafael Nadal. Her left handed serve doesn’t need to be the fastest for it to be a weapon but her defensive skills are off the charts. She is also able to launch offense from anywhere much like the Spanish superstar. Kerber hasn’t lost a set in this tournament since the second round of the event, the only set she has dropped thus far.

Serena Williams

There wasn’t meant to be much else that could be said about Serena Williams. She is already one of the all-time greats but if she can win a Grand Slam just months after giving birth that might just override everything she has ever done in the game. While we should remember this is just her fourth tournament back she has been excellent in this event so far.

Serena will be competing in her 30th Grand Slam final here and her 10th Wimbledon final so if experience is going to play a part in this final then you would think the American is close to unstoppable. From the outside it has looked like Serena has got better with every match which is sure to give her confidence for this final.

Head to Head

These two stars have met eight times in the past with Serena Williams leading 6-2 in career head to head. She won their last meeting which was that final here in 2016 but they are 1-1 in total in Grand Slam finals after Kerber had previously denied the American in the Australian Open final of the same year. Their Wimbledon final was their only grass court meeting of the eight battles they have had against each other.

Betting

I really think we are in for a classic final here. When these two met in the championship showdown two years ago they played out a 21 game contest but Kerber admitted the nerves of the occasion got the better of her. Since then she has won a second Grand Slam title and been world number one so I’m expecting a much better performance from her in this final.

We’ve heard all week how Serena has to raise her game because opponents lift their own record against her and I’m expecting the American to play to a good standard here. This is without a doubt the toughest battle both will have had this fortnight and the way they are playing I’m expecting a close battle. I certainly wouldn’t rule Kerber out of this final but followers of this site are on her at 12/1 having taken her outright before the event began. I’ll leave that but in lieu of expecting a tight tussle I’ll happily take over 21.5 games here.
