2019-20 Big Bash League – Sydney Sixers vs Melbourne Stars Tips and Betting Preview

We have another double header of action in the Big Bash League on Monday and it all begins in Sydney where two of the top three in the table meet as the Sydney Sixers host the Melbourne Stars at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The Melbourne Stars have already confirmed top spot in the table with three matches left but the Sixers are fighting hard to get above the Adelaide Strikers into second place in the table and a win here will help them in that quest.

Sydney Sixers

The Sydney Sixers have seen their progress hampered by the weather in recent times, but they have no such issues here with the forecast much improved, so they will be looking to get back on track, although that won’t be easy against the team who have been the best in the league so far this term. It is hard to judge the Sixers’ form recently because they have been involved in a load of shortened matches. They have the chance to show their worth here.

The suspicion is that they are not batting very well, and I daresay that probably won’t be too far wrong because it is comfortably the weakest of their suits. In the main in this tournament they have bowled well, particularly at home, and they won’t need telling they will need to do that here as the brutal beating they took in Melbourne will still be fresh in their memories. A win here will set them up nicely for the rest of the season.

Melbourne Stars

The Melbourne Stars have been nearly perfect so far this season. They have 10 wins from their 11 matches and the one they lost, they probably should have won as well. I’ve gone on record to say I don’t think they have been at their best in the tournament yet. I think they are getting closer though. The test for them now will be to maintain their intensity for the remainder of the regular season even though they are not playing for anything in it.

The one thing that has been consistent throughout the tournament for the Melbourne Stars has been their bowling. Even when they have picked up injuries or rested players they have still delivered the goods with the ball, and that has only proceeded to make their life much easier when it comes to having the bat in their hands. Although they are playing for little now, winning form going into the playoffs is often a plus.

Team News

The Sixers finally saw Nathan Lyon in the rain hampered Sydney Smash at the weekend and he could play a first full game here because the Sixers have named an unchanged squad for this top of the table clash.

Melbourne Stars have made the one change to their ranks for this match with Jackson Coleman returning from injury to replace Nathan Coulter-Nile who has been rested for this game. That is the only switch to their ranks.

Betting

I’m not expecting a high scoring match here. We got one in Melbourne when these two met but that Stars innings was coming of a freak and I don’t see it happening again. We have two decent bowling attacks on show here which is never a bad thing when a low scoring game is anticipated, while the Sydney Sixers in particular are a batsman light and the Stars have been so good with the bat recently that if they lose a couple of early wickets their middle order might be rusty.

The runs line for this match is 310.5 and that just feels a little high to me. Scores of 150+ are not regular occurrences on this ground because the pitch is often slow and taking turn, and the outfield is pretty big. We are going to need at least one of those for the under to fail and I just don’t see it. I’m comfortable taking the under here as I don’t see many more than 300 runs in this one if there is that many.
