Another weekend in the Bundesliga begins on Friday night when two sides kick the action off in what is a big match for the visitors Bayer Leverkusen. They head to Freiburg looking to repair some of the damage they impacted on themselves in midweek.
Freiburg have been a funny team to gauge since the return to action and it will be interesting to see which side of them we get here. It will also be intriguing to see if this absurd run of home teams struggling continues too.
Freiburg
Freiburg are yet to pick up a victory since they returned to action but they have showcased their credentials by holding Leipzig to a 1-1 draw in their first game. A very disappointing home defeat against Werder Bremen followed that before an exciting 3-3 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt entertained many of us in midweek. If they can find a victory here they will catapult them right back into the chase for a European spot.
In the main Freiburg have been decent enough at home this season, although home form seems to mean little at present. They have slipped up against the bottom two on their own pitch this season however which immediately paints a picture of the need for caution. Clean sheets are becoming a bit of an issue too. They have only kept one of those in their last 14 matches and that is a worrying statistic given who is in the opposition here.
Bayer Leverkusen
Leverkusen went into the break in fine form and they came out of it looking every bit as impressive with comfortable road wins at Werder Bremen and in a key clash with Borussia Monchengladbach, however their momentum came to a crushing halt in midweek when Wolfsburg put four past them on their own patch. It might be that another road trip brings out the best in Leverkusen once again, and having dropped out of the top four they will need it to.
The positive for the visitors going into this match is that only Bayern Munich have won more matches on their travels this season, and we’ve seen this week that they look head and shoulders clear of anything else in the league. Leverkusen certainly have goals in them and have one of the most promising marksmen in Bundesliga in Kai Havertz. His threat makes them a really dangerous proposition.

Team News
Nils Pedersen came off the bench in midweek to find the back of the net and he could be rewarded for that with a starting berth in this match. Freiburg will be without the injured Janik Haberer for this one though so a rejig in defence could be needed.
Kevin Volland remains an injury absence for Bayer Leverkusen so they are likely to rely upon Kai Havertz to lead their attack once again. Jamaica international Leon Bailey will be hoping to start this game having been on the bench since the resumption.
Betting
All logic from what we have seen so far since the Bundesliga came back would point to a Bayer Leverkusen win here. Freiburg are yet to win since the break and home teams are enduring an appalling record, while only Bayern have picked up more wins on the road than Leverkusen this season, and indeed since the return the visitors have won both away trips. I just don’t have it in me to back a side who have just been walloped especially at odds on.
Instead I will look to the goals market here and I’m delighted to see that the line for them is only 3, which I think is pretty generous. Freiburg have just shipped three to a misfiring Eintracht Frankfurt side so there is a good chance Leverkusen are going to have a lot of joy in front of goal in this match. We saw more attacking intent from Freiburg in midweek though and to be fair to Leverkusen, while they have won matches since the restart, they haven’t kept a clean sheet and do look prepared to leave themselves open to chase goals. I’m happy to take the over here.
