Top level football returns this weekend as the Bundesliga steps where nobody else has gone before and attempts to return from the COVID-19 suspension. It will do so behind closed doors but with the eyes of the world on them, eagerly hoping they set the benchmark for other leagues to follow suit as and when they are able.
The German top flight returns with six matches across the course of Saturday afternoon, each of which will be shown live on BT Sport and their various channels and platforms, and there are some tasty ones among them for those of us in desperate need of a football watching and betting fix to enjoy.
Saturday’s fixtures are as follows: (14.30 UK time unless stated)
Borussia Dortmund v FC Schalke 04
FC Augsburg v VfL Wolfsburg
Fortuna Düsseldorf v SC Paderborn 07
RB Leipzig v SC Freiburg
1899 Hoffenheim v Hertha Berlin
Eintracht Frankfurt v Borussia Mönchengladbach (17.30)

Preview
Bundesliga returns with one of the biggest matches of the season as two teams who absolutely hate each other clash at Signal Iduna Park as title chasing Borussia Dortmund take on Schalke. That is the headline attraction on the first day back while at the other end of the table two of the bottom three meet when Fortuna Dusseldorf host Paderborn in a game neither can really afford to lose, not least the visitors although their survival cause might already be dead. Another team heavily involved in the title race are RB Leipzig and they host Freiburg.
Elsewhere Augsburg host Wolfsburg but will be without their manager after despite being quarantined in a hotel ahead of the game he thought it was a good idea to go to the shop to buy toothpaste! Hoffenheim take on Hertha Berlin in the other match at the usual kick off time while the evening clash comes from the Commerzbank Arena as Eintracht Frankfurt resume their campaign by hosting Borussia Monchengladbach.
Betting
Before we get stuck into the bets it is probably important to have a think about how the lack of fans and the five subs and everything else is going to impact the proceedings. The truth is we’ll only know after these games but my gut instinct is to avoid away sides in the main and go nowhere near teams who have little to play for. My hunch is that we’ll see more goals but that is to be confirmed I guess.
I’ll take a couple of bets over the course of the day and we’ll start with the title chasers RB Leipzig who I expect to be far too good for Freiburg. The visitors sit in eighth in the table so there is a slim chance they can make Europe next season. I say slim, mathematically they are in the race but they look the weakest side in it. Either way I don’t see them troubling Leipzig. Leipzig are going for the title and they have Timo Werner for whom this is a shop window ahead of a potentially big move in the summer. Only the top two have scored more than the 62 goals Leipzig have registered this term but nobody has conceded fewer than the 26 they have let in. That statistic leads me to thinking the home side can return with a comfortable win over their low scoring opponents.
The other bet comes in the later game where Borussia Monchengladbach will look to enhance their outside hopes for the title or a Champions League place at the very least. They seem unable to keep a clean sheet at the minute though and that will interest their hosts Eintracht Frankfurt, a side who probably needed the break more than anyone when it arrived given their exploits in domestic and European cup competitions. Frankfurt are known for being an offensive unit and are one of the higher scorers in Bundesliga. They ship goals at quite some rate too though and I don’t see either part of that equation changing behind closed doors. This looks a prime candidate for over 2.5 goals to me.
