2019-20 Bundesliga – Sunday 24th May Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The second Bundesliga weekend back concludes on Sunday when the final three fixtures take place ahead of a tantalising midweek round of matches. Although we’ve seen many of the more established sides already this weekend, a triple header of football can never be played down in these times.

The focus comes more at the bottom end of the table on Sunday although we do get to see what RB Leipzig have left in the tank after their disappointing return to action last week. Schalke are also among the big names in action on Sunday.

Schalke vs Augsburg (12.30 UK time)

The action begins with Schalke looking to bounce back from their mauling at the hands of their rivals Dortmund last weekend when they host an Augsburg side who are in shocking form either side of the shutdown and who are in danger of getting sucked into the relegation mix if they are not careful.

I think it would be folly to think we won’t get a response from Schalke to that loss last week but that was such a beating that we would need to see it before we can back it happening. I can’t say I’m in any rush to back Augsburg in their current form either though so the opening match looks very much like one to watch and learn from rather than get too deeply involved from a betting point of view.

Mainz vs RB Leipzig (14.30)

Two teams who had poor draws last week meet in the second match of the three on Sunday when struggling Mainz host a RB Leipzig side whose title hopes might just have been ended by dropping those two points at home to a bang average Freiburg side.

Once again we will probably get a reaction from Leipzig to that result and they are the side I would expect to win of the two but they were so flat at home to Freiburg last week that I couldn’t possibly justify backing them. Timo Werner’s is just starting to fade away a little which is another concern. Mainz looked like a side who were playing because they had to for an hour or so last week then suddenly turned it on so who knows what to expect from them. I expect Leipzig to win this but I expected them to win last week too and they didn’t. I’m not getting involved in them again.

FC Koln vs Dusseldorf (17.00)

The final match of the weekend comes from Cologne where FC Koln will look to make up for blowing their 2-0 lead against Mainz last week when they entertain the lowest scorers in the Bundesliga in Dusseldorf, a side who are deep in the relegation mire.

Dusseldorf have already seen Werder Bremen close in on them this weekend and by the time they play here but Mainz and Augsburg could have pulled further away from them if they pick up results so this feels like a big game for the visitors. To be fair to Dusseldorf they have not lost in four matches but they’ve actually only won one of their last nine in the Bundesliga, a contrast to FC Koln who have won six of their last 10 and should have won a seventh in that time having been 2-0 up on Mainz last week. The three defeats were to teams in the top four so we can write them off. It looked like Koln ran out of legs last week so you’ve got to think with the extra week of training and a match inside them they will be physically better here in which case I expect them to pile more misery onto the strugglers.
