2019-20 Premier League – Saturday 18th January Matches Tips and Betting Preview

We have a busy run of action in the Premier League over the next week or so and that all begins with a good card of matches on Saturday afternoon, as a number of sides go in search of three points to help their overall position.

We have to wait until Sunday for the league leaders to be in action but there plenty of decent teams and matches making up the schedule on Saturday, where we have the usual three kick off times and two live matches to entertain us.

Early Kick Off

The action begins with a London derby of sorts at Vicarage Road where the form horses Watford look to continue their revival when they play host to Tottenham Hotspur, a side who offered their best when Jose Mourinho arrived but whose form has just taken a slight dent. All eyes will be on this one to see if Spurs can get back on track in the absence of Harry Kane or whether their indifferent form of the last 12 months or so continues against a Watford side who are fighting for their lives.

3pm Matches

There are six matches that kick off in the traditional 3pm slot this weekend. The champions Manchester City are one of them. They host Crystal Palace in a match the Londoners ran out winners in last season. Arsenal will look to continue their improvement under Mikel Arteta when they host a determined and hard to beat Sheffield United side while there is a huge game at the bottom of the table at the Amex Stadium as Brighton host Aston Villa who really need to find some points.

There is another massive match at that part of the table as bottom of the pile Norwich City host a Bournemouth side who are in free fall at the minute and in need of something to stop the rot. Southampton will look to continue their decent run of form when they host Wolverhampton Wanderers and the other match in this slot sees David Moyes host his former club when West Ham United welcome Everton to the London Stadium.

Late Game

We finish up on Tyneside as Newcastle United look to arrest their slide towards the danger zone when they go up against a Chelsea team who will be battling for the points themselves in their own battle to finish in the top four at the end of the season. Both these sides have developed an inconsistency about them which only adds to the intrigue and tough to call nature of the final game of a busy Saturday in the Premier League.

Betting

Brighton and Hove Albion look a little short to me against Aston Villa. I accept Villa have just been dealt a right old beating by Manchester City but while Brighton have improved they are not in the league of City just yet. Ultimately, Brighton have only won two of their last 11 in the Premier League and that is not a record I can be backing at odds on. Villa might not be anything special but their need for points is such that we know they will be giving this one their all. In Jack Grealish they will have the best player on the pitch and that shouldn’t be understated. You can get Villa on a +0.75 asian line and that looks a little too much. I’ll jump on that line.

The other bet I like on Saturday is for Southampton to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers. I watched Wolves in midweek and they looked absolutely knackered to me and less than 72hrs later they are in action again. Nuno Espirito Santo chose not to rest too many at Old Trafford in midweek and his side could pay the price for that against a Southampton side who are very much on the up, and who in Danny Ings have one of the most potent marksmen in the division right now. Since that humiliation from Leicester City earlier in the season, Saints have been in decent nick and although I’m often wary of backing them at home, where their record is ordinary really, I can’t ignore how shattered Wolves looked in midweek. Home side for me here.
